BYD's July Export Surge Meets a Wall of Investor Skepticism

BYD's July exports jump 124% to 179,841 units, but domestic price war and 55% Q1 profit drop keep shares near 52-week lows.

The arithmetic is striking: nearly 180,000 vehicles shipped abroad in a single month, a 124.3 percent leap from the prior-year period, and yet the market response was a shrug. BYD's July sales report, published over the weekend, painted a picture of a company whose international engine is firing on all cylinders while its home market sputters — a divergence that has left the stock trading roughly a quarter below its August 2025 peak.

The Shenzhen-based automaker delivered 419,211 new-energy vehicles in July, up 21.76 percent year on year and marking the third consecutive month of annual growth. What caught the eye, however, was the composition of that tally. International deliveries hit 179,841 units, meaning roughly 43 percent of the month's volume — nearly one in two vehicles — came from outside China. For a group that for years leaned almost entirely on domestic demand, that shift in sales mix is nothing short of structural.

Yet the year-to-date picture remains stubbornly negative. Through July, BYD handed over just under 2.23 million vehicles, a decline of 10.54 percent versus the same stretch of 2025. Encouragingly, that shortfall has narrowed from the 15.72 percent drop recorded at the half-year mark — the July surge has visibly arrested the slide — but the recovery is far from complete.

A Stock That Refuses to Celebrate

The equity market has taken little comfort from the operational rebound. On Tuesday, BYD shares slipped 2.51 percent to EUR 9.93, leaving the stock nearly 25 percent below its 52-week high of EUR 13.23 set on August 26, 2025. The prior session told a similar story: a modest 1.51 percent gain to EUR 10.19, still 23.02 percent off that watermark.

Investors, it seems, are fixated on the margin erosion that has plagued recent quarters rather than the export momentum. Net profit collapsed 55 percent in the first quarter of 2026, with margins under sustained pressure. The brutal price war in China's domestic EV market — where competitors slash prices to defend share — continues to weigh on profitability, and the international expansion, however promising, will take time to flow through to the bottom line.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

That tension between operational strength and financial caution was on display in how analysts digested the July numbers. Reuters framed the robust overseas demand as offsetting softer conditions at home; Bloomberg struck a more skeptical chord, suggesting the figures raise questions about whether BYD can hit its full-year 2026 target.

Brazil: From Importer to Manufacturer

Against that backdrop, BYD has taken a significant step to deepen its international footprint. On August 4, the company unveiled its first locally produced plug-in hybrid in Brazil, according to Reuters — a vehicle that pairs the electrified drivetrain with Flex-Fuel technology, allowing it to run on varying blends of gasoline and ethanol, a staple of the Brazilian market.

The move is more than a product launch. It marks BYD's transition from pure importer to local manufacturer in one of the most important growth markets outside China. Local assembly sidesteps import tariffs and strengthens the company's position against established players on their home turf. The company has not disclosed production volumes or investment figures for the new line, but the strategic logic is clear: reduce reliance on exports from China and lock in regional market share.

The Brazilian initiative is one piece of a broader international push that also includes an aggressive entry into Japan. There, BYD has launched the Racco compact car at a starting price of JPY 2.145 million — roughly USD 13,100 — a direct challenge to domestic stalwarts in their own market.

New Models, New Ambitions

Product development continues in parallel with the geographic expansion. Early August saw BYD open order books for the Denza Z9S, offered in three trim levels priced between approximately USD 47,100 and USD 57,000. The vehicle boasts a range of up to 1,100 kilometers on China's CLTC cycle and carries the second-generation Blade battery, which can charge from 10 to 70 percent in five minutes.

The Dynasty flagship Han is also getting a refresh: a battery-electric version with up to 1,008 kilometers of range is slated for public debut at the Chengdu Auto Show, which opens August 21. And in a nod to the company's longer-term ambitions, BYD has announced the first public showing of a humanoid robot in August, developed by an in-house unit that has been working on the project since late 2024. Timelines for commercialization remain unspecified.

The August 27 Reckoning

All eyes now turn to the second-quarter earnings release, expected on August 27. That report will show whether July's strength translates into a stabilized margin — or whether the domestic price war continues to overshadow overseas gains. Investors will also be watching whether management reaffirms its 2026 delivery target or revises it downward.

The Brazil production ramp will likely feature in the discussion, as evidence of how BYD is navigating regulatory and logistical hurdles in key markets. Whether that narrative is enough to close the gap between operational progress and profitability concerns, however, is a question that only the numbers can answer. Until then, the stock looks set to oscillate between the two forces that define its current predicament: a global expansion firing on all cylinders and a home market that refuses to let go of its grip on margins.
