BYD's New Sedan Has a Launch Date; Its Earnings Don't Have the Numbers
Published on 11/01/2026 at 13:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD will bring the second-generation Seal 07 to market on 5 November, the company said Friday, offering the model in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid form. The confirmed date follows Monday's opening of reservations, which media reports said include the second generation of the Blade Battery and fast-charging technology. No price was disclosed when orders opened.
The rollout calendar is the clearest thing BYD has going for it this week. Just about everything else — the third-quarter print, the analyst notes, the stock ratings — comes with an asterisk.
Two Houses, Two Verdicts
Morgan Stanley on Friday reiterated an Overweight rating on BYD's H-shares with a target of HK$114, pointing to the profitability of the overseas business and the company's ability to convert sales into earnings. JPMorgan had moved the other way on Tuesday, cutting its targets on both share classes.
The U.S. bank downgraded the A-shares from Neutral to Underweight and slashed the target to RMB 65 from RMB 88. Its H-share stance stayed at Neutral, but the target there was trimmed to HK$60 from HK$88. The two calls do not add up to a single sell signal on BYD — the downgrade applied specifically to the A-line, even as the bank turned more cautious on the H-line's valuation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
JPMorgan's reasoning: stagnating domestic demand, higher component costs, lower VAT rebates on exports, and the prospect of EU import quotas on plug-in hybrids.
Currency Losses Take a Bite
Morgan Stanley flagged foreign-exchange losses exceeding RMB 2 billion in the third quarter of 2026 — a drag it absorbed while keeping its positive stance. That focus on overseas profitability shifts the question from how much BYD sells abroad to how much of it survives costs and currency swings.
The quarterly report, released Thursday, provides the backdrop. Net profit rose 28.08% year on year to RMB 10.02 billion. Revenue climbed 13.6% to RMB 221.5 billion, according to Reuters. Growth on both lines, in other words — but not enough of it on the bottom line.
Broker estimates had ranged from RMB 11.4 billion to RMB 12.95 billion. The result fell short of even the low end. Reuters also reported margin pressure from intense competition in the home market.
BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
What the Launch Does and Doesn't Tell You
The Seal 07's November debut is a concrete milestone, and the reservation-to-launch sequence is proceeding on schedule. What it does not do is put a number on the model's future contribution to revenue, or offset either the profit miss or the diverging analyst views.
For investors, the two threads need to be kept apart. BYD is pushing its model lineup forward; at the same time, rising quarterly profit is not sufficient when expectations sit above it. The valuation debate now turns on how durable those earnings are against domestic competition — and how much profitable contribution the overseas business can deliver. That is precisely where Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan part ways.
