BYD recalls 183,211 Qin and Tang vehicles over brake-pedal stoppers, while exports jumped 85.72% and shares closed at EUR 9.00, down 16% this year.

BYD is pressing ahead with an aggressive international expansion even as a mandatory safety recall at home tests its service network. China's market regulator ordered the immediate recall of 183,211 vehicles from the Qin and Tang model lines, covering units built between 2014 and 2022. According to Reuters, brake-pedal stoppers on the affected cars can develop cracks or detach entirely. The automaker will replace the faulty components free of charge through authorized dealerships.

The announcement left its mark on the stock. Shares closed Friday at EUR 9.00, down 0.8% on the day and 16% since the start of the year. The paper now trades 28% below its 52-week high.

While the material cost of the replacement parts is likely to stay modest, the logistical burden is another matter. Marshaling hundreds of thousands of vehicles through workshops ties up capacity in BYD's domestic service network at a time when the company can ill afford friction with its home customer base. Safety recalls are a recurring reputational hazard for automakers, and BYD's priority will be to move the process through its dealer network quickly and without disruption. A well-functioning after-sales operation, after all, underpins the growth the company is chasing abroad.

Export Machine Shifts Into Higher Gear

That overseas growth engine is running hot. Deliveries outside China climbed 85.72% year-on-year to just over 1.16 million units in the first eight months, and the company has reportedly raised its full-year export target to as much as 2 million vehicles. August alone set a fresh monthly record of 189,466 units sold abroad — more than double the prior-year figure — accounting for a little over 43% of BYD's total monthly vehicle sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The strategic logic is straightforward. Fierce price competition in China is squeezing margins, making international channels both more profitable and a stabilizing force for overall volumes. Management told investors on September 8 that it is targeting 1.9 million to 2.0 million deliveries outside China for full-year 2026, which would amount to roughly a doubling from the prior year's level. For 2027, the company has dangled more than 2.5 million overseas deliveries, a figure Deutsche Bank relayed from the meeting.

Local Production to Blunt Trade Barriers

To sidestep tariffs and satisfy local manufacturing requirements, BYD is building production capacity on the ground. Its European site is designed for an annual output of 200,000 vehicles. The company sharpened its European footprint plans last Friday, though the geopolitical backdrop remains difficult — steep US import duties continue to shut Chinese electric vehicles out of that market.

There was also talk more than a month ago of placing Chairman Wang Chuanfu in the business delegation for the upcoming summit between President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump on September 24.

New Markets, New Models

Beyond Europe, BYD opened pre-sales of its Ti7 model in Argentina on Tuesday, marking the debut of its in-house DM-p hybrid technology in that market.

At home, meanwhile, the second quarter offered a mixed picture. Net profit rose 30% to 8.2 billion yuan, but that fell short of analyst expectations for a gain of roughly 48%. The recall order serves as a reminder that tending to an aging domestic fleet demands just as much care as the global sales push — and that both will compete for the same operational bandwidth.
