BYD is heading into its third-quarter board meeting on 29 October with fresh metal on showroom floors, a milestone in its commercial-vehicle division and a share price that has given up 22% since the start of the year. The stock closed at EUR 8.34 on Friday, leaving it just 3.9% above its 52-week low of EUR 8.03 — a thin cushion for a company still rolling out new models at a furious clip.

A Seven-Seat SUV for Europe, a City Car for China

The international push was on display at the Paris Motor Show, where BYD unveiled the ATTO 8, a seven-seat SUV fitted with a 115-kilowatt-hour second-generation battery. The company quotes a combined WLTP range of up to 653 kilometres, with a European market launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. The move into Europe's large-family segment comes as the regulatory and tax environment for Chinese manufacturers tightens noticeably.

At home, the group is refreshing its entry-level offering. According to media reports, BYD plans to launch the second generation of the Seagull in China on 20 October, with a larger footprint and modern LiDAR-based driver-assistance hardware. Management is using the update to defend market share in a fiercely competitive home market, betting that bigger cabins and advanced assistance systems will keep price-conscious buyers on side.

Da Han Lands With a 1,008-km Range

Those efforts are flanked by the Da Han electric sedan, which BYD introduced in China on Tuesday. Prices run from 235,900 to 275,900 yuan, undercutting the level of earlier pre-sales. For the flagship, the company quotes a maximum range of up to 1,008 kilometres under China's CLTC test cycle. BYD is also emphasising extremely short charging stops, aiming to dispel customer doubts about long-distance usability. Upgrading the core line-up is meant to preserve a technological edge over rivals in the more profitable segment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Battery Share Gains and a Truck Milestone

The home market continues to deliver operating momentum. On Thursday it emerged that BYD reached an installed volume of 18.29 gigawatt-hours in electric-vehicle batteries in China in September, holding a 21.09% market share and second place behind CATL. The gap to the market leader narrowed for the fourth consecutive month.

Commercial vehicles added their own landmark. At the Huai'an plant, an electric Q3 tractor unit became the 150,000th new-energy commercial vehicle to roll off the assembly lines — an event reported on 10 October, with the primary article placing the same milestone on 9 October. BYD used the occasion to reaffirm plans to step up investment in heavy long-haul trucks. The freight expansion opens an additional business field beyond passenger cars, and with the conversion of Chinese logistics fleets politically driven, demand for alternative drivetrains keeps the plants well utilised.

That shows through in the latest monthly report. For September, BYD posted total sales of 463,561 new-energy vehicles, an increase of 16.98% year on year. The company stressed that these figures are unaudited and may be subject to later adjustment.

Export Headwinds Gather

Abroad, the picture is cloudier. China's finance ministry announced on 12 October that it will cut the VAT rebate on exports of alternative-drive vehicles from 13% to 9% effective 1 April 2027, a move that threatens to squeeze the export margins of Chinese electric-car makers. On top of that, ongoing debate in the European Union over possible caps on imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles has weighed on the whole sector on the stock market.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Management has drawn clear boundaries around its target markets. Executive Vice President Stella Li said at the Milken Institute Asia Summit that, given geopolitical uncertainty, the company has no plans at present to enter the United States with passenger cars, citing a lack of clarity and stability. Geopolitical tensions, she stressed, are the biggest obstacle to global expansion. The sales strategy will therefore focus for now on other overseas markets and the European continent.

Analysts Trim Targets but Keep Buying

Sentiment on the equity remains cautious. Bernstein cut its price target for the stock on 9 October to USD 16.57 from USD 17.33, while reaffirming its buy recommendation. CGS International had already lowered its target on 7 October to USD 13.20 from USD 14.53, also keeping a "Buy" rating. With the board due to review third-quarter results on 29 October, investors now have a date to circle.
