BYD's Product Push Meets a Cautious Analyst Call Ahead of October 29 Results
Published on 10/27/2026 at 12:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD is keeping its product engine running at full tilt, but the reception on the analyst side has cooled. JPMorgan downgraded the Chinese automaker's A-shares from "Neutral" to "Underweight" yesterday while trimming its earnings expectations — a more guarded stance that lands just as the company prepares to report third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, October 29.
The distinction matters for anyone reading the note. Both the investment rating and the price target apply specifically to BYD's A-shares, whereas the lower profit forecast concerns the company as a whole. JPMorgan cut its target on the A-shares from RMB 88 to RMB 65, pairing a weaker recommendation with a reduced benchmark for that share class — not a case of an unchanged rating with only a tweaked earnings estimate.
What the Downgrade Does and Doesn't Say
The revised figure is an analyst estimate, not a profit already booked and not a company forecast. The cut also applies to the coming fiscal year, so it should not be read as a verdict on business already delivered. That separation shapes how the upcoming release should be judged: a quarterly result and a longer-range earnings assumption answer different questions. The pending numbers may provide a fresh reference point, but they will not on their own confirm or refute the full-year projection.
A Fresh Qin Plus Generation Lands in China
On the operational front, BYD introduced the third generation of its Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid sedan in China today, pairing limited-time pricing with a greater emphasis on electric driving in the product mix. Media reports put the temporary prices at RMB 76,900 to RMB 97,900, with an all-electric range of up to 220 kilometers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
That range figure covers electric operation only, not the total range of the plug-in hybrid. The time-limited nature of the pricing deserves equal weight — no permanent price positioning can be inferred from the offer. Whether the launch stirs additional demand will only become clear in sales volumes.
The Qin Plus follows the second-generation Seagull, which BYD brought to market in China on October 20 equipped with the second generation of its Blade battery technology and Flash Charging fast-charging capability. Together, the two launches refresh both a battery-electric model and a plug-in hybrid sedan, each with a different technical focus. Neither yet offers proof of how demand or earnings will shift as a result.
Brazil Expansion Still at the Planning Stage
Abroad, BYD is pursuing larger production ambitions. Reuters reported on Friday that the company is seeking approvals to double the annual capacity of its Brazilian plant to 600,000 vehicles, targeting a monthly output of 25,000 units there by the end of 2026. By the start of 2027, BYD aims for more than 50 percent locally sourced components in Brazil, complementing the planned manufacturing scale-up.
The gap between expansion target and actual production remains the key distinction. The permit application is not a completed capacity increase, and the monthly output goal describes an intended level rather than volume already achieved.

A US Base Exclusion Adds Another Thread
Separately, BYD drew attention over an announced restriction by the US military. Reuters reported on Friday that BYD vehicles should be excluded from Kadena Air Base on Okinawa over security concerns, with the measure slated to begin yesterday. That development concerns access to one specific military installation; it is distinct from the earnings estimate and does not on its own demonstrate a company-wide sales impact.
For investors, the immediate financial checkpoint stays the scheduled results release. JPMorgan's move has set a more cautious frame of expectations around it — one explicitly tied to the A-shares. Today's model launch represents operational progress, but it is not yet evidence of additional revenue.
