BYD will unveil a new model at the Paris Motor Show from October 12 to 18, even as JPMorgan cut its H-share rating to Neutral and its target to 88 HK$.

BYD is pressing ahead on multiple fronts, combining an overseas product rollout with a high-profile appearance at this month's Paris Motor Show — even as equity analysts and investors grow more guarded about the pace and cost of that international expansion.

The Chinese automaker confirmed on Monday that it will attend the Paris industry gathering, which runs from October 12 to 18, and will unveil a new model to the public. A dedicated press conference is scheduled for the opening day, October 12. The event represents the company's latest move to steadily build out its European footprint.

Racco Demand Runs Ahead of Supply — and Japan Is Only the Start

Fresh data on BYD's electric microcar, the Racco, underscores how quickly its overseas bets can gain traction. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the model has drawn more than 1,000 orders in the weeks since sales began in Japan. Management, however, is aiming for roughly ten times that level of demand. Word of plans to extend Racco distribution beyond Japan had already surfaced a day earlier.

The broader export picture is equally strong. Worldwide sales of vehicles with alternative drivetrains climbed to 463,561 units in September, supported by a sharp rise in shipments abroad to 180,700. Reuters noted that the buoyant export business is helping offset persistently weak demand at home, where an aggressive price war and cautious consumers are weighing on automakers' volumes. For BYD, international markets are taking on greater strategic importance, with a wider distribution network intended to reduce reliance on domestic demand.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

JPMorgan Steps to the Sidelines

Not everyone is cheering the growth story. On September 29, JPMorgan downgraded the H-shares from "Overweight" to "Neutral" and cut its price target to 88 HK$ from 124 HK$. The brokerage pointed to an expected soft patch in China's auto sector — in the second half of 2026, according to the analysts — alongside rising input costs and political uncertainty. Tariffs and non-tariff barriers, they warned, could slow the overseas build-out and cap valuation upside.

Those concerns capture the structural challenges facing Chinese EV makers as they globalize. Beyond tightening regulation, winning share in Europe demands heavy spending on distribution and marketing.

Product Offensive Continues Despite the Doubts

None of that has slowed BYD's product cadence. A little over a week ago, the company announced model updates as its Dynasty line rolled out its ten-millionth vehicle. On October 13, the Da Han sedan is set to launch officially as the next flagship of that series.

To keep production on track, BYD hired more than 8,000 workers at its Xi'an site following upgrades to its manufacturing lines, with the additions spread across several plants and business units there, according to media reports. The company is also addressing quality matters: on September 18, it initiated a recall of 183,211 Tang and Qin vehicles to replace brake-pedal stoppers free of charge.

Market Reaction Muted

Investors have taken a wait-and-see stance. In Tuesday's session the stock slipped 0.5% to EUR 8.48. It closed at EUR 8.51 a day earlier. Year to date, the shares are down 21%. With sentiment subdued, the upcoming Paris gathering will serve as an important gauge of how the company responds to the cautious mood — and whether its overseas momentum can outrun the headwinds analysts now see building.
