BYD's September Export Surge Meets a Fresh Model Offensive — With Washington Still Off the Map

BYD shares climbed 4.1% to EUR 8.64 on Friday, riding a broad rebound in Chinese automakers on the Hong Kong exchange after two softer sessions. The bounce came as the sector drew comfort from last month's alternative-vehicle sales data, with the overseas market emerging as the standout growth engine for the Shenzhen-based manufacturer.
Deliveries worldwide reached 463,561 vehicles in September, according to Reuters — a 17% jump from a year earlier. Passenger car and pickup exports were the real fireworks, surging 153.9% over the same stretch. That export momentum has become a central pillar of the bull case, particularly with the home market still working through a patchy peak season.
Analysts Trim Forecasts Even as They Keep the Faith
Not everyone is ready to celebrate. UOB Kay Hian cut its volume estimates for several automakers spanning 2026 to 2028 on Friday, pointing to first-nine-month sales that have trailed original market expectations. Even so, the brokerage left its buy rating on BYD intact, flagging the sheer effort required to hit the company's internal target of five million units in 2026 — an average of 622,800 vehicles sold per month in the fourth quarter alone.
JPMorgan struck a more cautious tone, downgrading the stock from Overweight to Neutral on September 29 and trimming its price target to HK$88, citing persistent weakness across China's auto market.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
The stock has shed 20% since the start of the year, a slide that has left it hovering well below its 52-week high of EUR 12.30. Its 52-week low sits at EUR 8.03 — a level that now serves as the line in the sand for anyone betting on a sustained recovery. Friday's advance, which followed a 3.1% gain to EUR 8.56 earlier in the session, reflects what market watchers describe as a technical countermove after worries over peak-season sales and China-EU trade friction were largely priced in.
Seagull Pre-Orders Open as a Robot Patent Surfaces
Timing, as it happens, is everything. Just as sentiment steadies, BYD has moved on the operational front. The company opened pre-orders in China for the second generation of its Seagull compact EV, unveiling six exterior colors while holding back on pricing. The absence of confirmed price points leaves room for a discount-driven scrap in the domestic market — a scenario that would eat into margins.
In a separate disclosure, China's intellectual property authority published a design patent from BYD for an intelligent humanoid robot, a product the company has yet to present publicly. The filing signals that BYD's development ambitions stretch beyond vehicle assembly, opening a potential valuation angle tied to robotics and highly automated manufacturing if the technology reaches series maturity.
America Stays Off the Table
Weighing against all of this is the geopolitical backdrop, which BYD's own leadership has described in blunt terms. Executive Vice President Stella Li told Reuters on Thursday that geopolitics represents the single biggest obstacle to the company's international expansion, and confirmed that BYD will hold off on selling passenger cars in the United States for the time being. Li cited a lack of clarity, visibility and stability in the US market.
The decision indefinitely postpones entry into the high-margin North American passenger vehicle segment, leaving BYD disproportionately reliant on China and on regions that are themselves debating trade barriers. Should uncertainty with the European Union flare up again, expansion plans there would face fresh hurdles — and new tariffs or regulatory requirements could squeeze margins further.
Investors are left weighing whether the remaining regions can carry global volume on their own. A European product push is already taking shape: BYD has scheduled a press conference and the unveiling of a new model at the Paris auto show on Monday. The next real test, though, will be the official release of Seagull pricing and the customer response that follows — the clearest signal yet of whether the model cycle can deliver the sales wave the company needs.
