BYD's stock drew fresh support on Monday as investors shifted their focus from a disappointing earnings print to the company's demand picture. The shares climbed roughly 3%, with intraday moves reported between 3.1% and 3.2%, after the Chinese automaker's October sales figures landed.

The rally follows a familiar split verdict on the company. Volume is growing. Profitability, at least judged against what the market had penciled in, is not keeping pace.

October deliveries: 490,168 vehicles, up 11%

BYD reported sales of 490,168 new-energy vehicles for October, an increase of 10.97% from a year earlier. Passenger-car and pickup exports accounted for 170,194 units, with Reuters putting the overseas gain at 102.8%.

That export surge is doing much of the heavy lifting for sentiment. According to Bloomberg, stronger foreign demand for Chinese cars is easing concerns about the soft domestic market, a framing that helps explain the day's buying. The question investors now face is how durable that growth can be while the home market remains sluggish.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The earnings picture is more complicated

The results BYD published on Thursday tell a different story. Third-quarter 2026 net profit attributable to shareholders rose 28.08% to RMB10.02 billion — a solid year-on-year advance that nonetheless fell short of consensus estimates compiled by Reuters.

The miss should not be read as a decline. It reflects the gap between a business that is improving and one that is meeting the bar set by the stock market. Revenue for the same quarter rose 13.59% to RMB221.49 billion, meaning BYD grew both its top line and its bottom line — just not by enough to satisfy expectations.

Zoom out and the picture darkens. Over the first nine months of 2026, net profit fell 4.24% to RMB22.34 billion. The third-quarter jump has not yet offset the weaker run through the earlier part of the year, which is why the latest quarterly improvement still needs confirmation before it can be treated as the start of a sustained trend.

Impairments explain part of the caution

There is a mechanical dimension to the earnings debate that deserves attention. Between January and September 2026, BYD booked credit and asset impairment charges of RMB3.654 billion, including RMB2.794 billion in inventory write-downs.

Those charges are already on the books. They should not be treated as a loss still to come, nor as an automatic signal that further write-downs are imminent. They do, however, illustrate why valuing BYD on vehicle volumes alone would be too narrow: the gap between selling more cars and converting that into shareholder returns runs through the income statement.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What would validate the rally

For the bullish case, the combination of rising revenue and a higher quarterly profit is the key building block. If that pairing persists, it would support the argument that BYD can monetize its growth rather than simply expand unit sales. Overseas demand would need to keep carrying — and, crucially, to show up in earnings rather than just in delivery tables.

The bearish scenario is a repeat of the current pattern: volumes climbing while profit undershoots. Higher sales would then prop up expectations only to disappoint again at the next results check. The fact that third-quarter profit rose yet still landed below forecasts makes that risk concrete. Nor can the export boom alone be assumed to permanently offset weakness in China — that is a hope, not yet a demonstrated outcome.

More monthly sales reports will show whether the delivery momentum holds. The more important test, though, comes with the next set of earnings: do they confirm the recent profit improvement, or does the stronger quarter stand without follow-through? Monday's move rewards the growth story. Whether it becomes something more depends on how reliably BYD turns that growth into profit.
