BYD may join Xi Jinping's 24 September Washington delegation, as it launches the Formula S line and targets 2.5 million overseas sales by 2027.

Chinese officials are vetting whether BYD should join the business delegation accompanying President Xi Jinping on his state visit to Washington, Bloomberg reports, with the trip pencilled in for 24 September. Staff working under Xi's chief of staff, Cai Qi, are sifting through a shortlist of the country's leading corporate figures to assemble the travelling party. A seat at the table would plant the automaker squarely on the diplomatic stage shared by the world's two largest economies.

The timing lands in the middle of an aggressive overseas drive. BYD is targeting more than 2.5 million vehicle sales abroad by 2027, a push designed to offset the squeeze from a brutal price war at home that has weighed heavily on profitability. Infrastructure is being built out in parallel: Deutsche Bank reckons the company intends to install 90,000 fast-charging stations by 2028, with 20,000 of them due before the end of this year and another 30,000 following across 2027.

Two Launches in Two Days

Back on home turf, the manufacturer rolled out fresh metal over consecutive days. On Sunday, its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand launched the Formula S line — five models split between three sedans and two GT variants, priced from 189,900 to 239,900 yuan, undercutting Tesla's Model 3. The technical centrepiece is the second generation of BYD's in-house Blade battery. According to the company, the integrated fast-charging system can go from 10% to 70% capacity in five minutes, while a 10% to 97% charge takes nine minutes.

Monday brought an addition at the entry level. The compact Yuan Up — sold as the Atto 2 on export markets — gained a Feichi Edition in China starting at 74,800 yuan. It runs a 51.13 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack from subsidiary FinDreams, good for up to 501 kilometres on the Chinese CLTC cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Charging infrastructure is expanding alongside the product offensive. BYD has already switched on more than 10,000 fast-charging points across 332 cities, and aims to double that network to 20,000 units by year-end.

Overseas Volume Outpaces a Soft Home Market

While China's overall market has shown weakness, business beyond its borders keeps climbing. August deliveries abroad reached 188,746 vehicles, up 134.6% year on year, taking the first eight months of the year to 1,157,954 units. Smaller overseas markets are contributing too: in New Zealand, four years after entering, BYD passed 15,000 registered vehicles. To soften local trade barriers, the group is building production capacity abroad — its plant in Brazil's Bahia state employed 5,500 direct staff in July, with full operations expected to generate 20,000 direct and indirect jobs at the South American site.

Shareholders Called to Vote

Attention now shifts to a corporate milestone. An extraordinary general meeting is set for 29 September, at which investors will vote on amendments to the company's articles of association, the election of board members, and the introduction of an asset pool business including related external guarantees.

The stock has taken the recent news in its stride. The share changed hands at EUR 9.03 today, a marginal 0.08% decline, and is down 16% since the start of the year. Pre-market indications earlier put the price at EUR 9.01.
