Canaan's Crypto War Chest Becomes a Buyback Engine as Shares Languish Near Record Lows

The arithmetic is striking: Canaan Inc.'s cryptocurrency holdings alone are worth more than the entire company at its current stock price. That unusual disconnect has finally prompted a strategic response from management — one that turns digital assets into ammunition for a share repurchase campaign.
Shares of the Chinese bitcoin mining hardware maker jumped 15.22 percent on Tuesday to close at EUR 0.1696, a notable bounce just two days after the stock touched a 52-week low of EUR 0.1372 on August 3. The move came as investors digested the company's plan to monetize part of its digital asset treasury to fund buybacks of its American Depositary Shares.
A Balance Sheet That Contradicts the Chart
The valuation gap driving this strategy is stark. As of August 3, Canaan held digital assets worth approximately $130 million — comprising 1,915 bitcoin and 3,952 ether — while the company's market capitalization stood at just EUR 110.02 million. Strip out the crypto holdings and the market is effectively assigning a negative value to the firm's mining hardware business and remaining cash reserves.
That disconnect is difficult to justify on any fundamental basis, regardless of the operational struggles the company has faced. Management clearly agrees. CEO Nangeng Zhang has authorized the sale of a portion of the Digital Asset Treasury to finance the repurchase of the company's own ADS, a form of internal arbitrage that only makes sense when management believes the market price is meaningfully below intrinsic value.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Canaan?
The buyback program, approved by the board on December 12, 2025, is capped at $30 million. Zhang framed the approach as a "disciplined" capital allocation strategy aimed at supporting long-term shareholder value, arguing that the current market valuation fails to reflect the company's true worth.
A Steep Climb Back
The stock remains deep in the red despite Tuesday's rebound. Shares are down 72.65 percent year-to-date and have lost 70.04 percent over the past twelve months. The current price sits 90.36 percent below the 52-week high of EUR 1.76, and the gap to the 50-day moving average stands at minus 40.37 percent — a persistent reminder that the broader trend remains firmly bearish.
Technical indicators offer only modest encouragement. The relative strength index at 33.7 suggests the stock is emerging from oversold territory, but that alone does not constitute a confirmed uptrend. With 30-day annualized volatility running at 125.69 percent, this remains a high-wire act for even the most risk-tolerant investors.
Analyst Optimism Meets Market Reality
Wall Street consensus sees substantial upside from current levels, with a mean price target of EUR 1.49 — implying potential gains of 778.1 percent. Some analysts have gone further, suggesting a target as high as $3.00 and rating the shares a buy, though they acknowledge that crypto-sector volatility remains a persistent risk factor.
The June production figure of 64 bitcoin mined shows the hardware business is still operational, even if it has not been enough to reassure sellers. The company's ability to stabilize output while deploying its crypto reserves strategically could determine whether the recent bounce develops into something more durable.
Canaan at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Tether Partnership Deepens
Beyond the financial engineering, Canaan reported progress on the operational front. The company has expanded its collaboration with Tether on immersion-cooled mining systems, with Tether placing a new order for modular mining hardware to scale its capacity. The order supports Tether's broader push into integrated bitcoin infrastructure resembling modern data centers, and gives Canaan a chance to demonstrate the relevance of its hardware in an industrial-scale environment. Financial terms and delivery specifics were not disclosed.
For a company whose balance sheet now functions as a floor under the share price, the path forward hinges on execution: converting crypto holdings into buyback firepower while proving the mining business can still compete. The raw materials for a recovery are there — but so, undeniably, are the risks.
