CATL shares climbed 7.8% on Friday, but the advance had little to do with the battery maker's own results. The move came as Chinese equities rallied broadly, with battery and other new-energy names drawing bargain hunters and money rotating out of sectors that had lagged. For anyone tempted to read the jump as a fresh verdict on CATL, the third-quarter figures published earlier in the week point the other way.

The gap that matters

Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 reached RMB 165.2 billion, up 58.6% year on year. Net profit came in at RMB 21.2 billion — a gain of 14.5%, but the weakest pace of earnings growth in nearly two years, according to Reuters, and short of what analysts had penciled in. Sales are racing ahead; profit is jogging behind.

That divergence is the crux of the investment case. A higher top line on its own does nothing to dispel the disappointment on the bottom line. What would: evidence that the additional business is carrying more of its weight through to earnings. The quarterly disclosure does not identify a single cost driver behind the slowdown, nor does it prove the pattern will persist. It does, however, reset the bar for coming operational updates — more scale would be welcome, but a visible contribution to profit would be more convincing.

Buybacks with real money behind them

Alongside the earnings release, CATL disclosed that its governing body has approved an employee share ownership plan covering up to 8,081,586 A-shares at a proposed price of RMB 158.42 apiece. The scheme still requires shareholder approval.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

The company has also been putting cash to work in the market. A report published Wednesday put repurchases of A-shares at 10,945,162 by September 30, for which CATL paid a total of RMB 3.303 billion excluding transaction fees. The buying falls under a program intended to cancel the repurchased stock, with a planned size of between RMB 20 billion and RMB 40 billion.

A million cars, and a station count to watch

On the growth side of the ledger, CATL closed an agreement on Friday with Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC). Compatible BAIC models will be added to CATL's Choco-Swap network, while BAIC's dealer network will help build out swap stations. The two companies are targeting one million vehicles served.

The logic is straightforward enough: more compatible models meeting a denser, more accessible station network could make battery swapping easier to use, and dealer support could help tie vehicle supply to infrastructure rollout. Yet the size of the intended fleet answers no question about profitability. A larger network does not by itself prove that CATL grows more profitably — the stations would need sufficient utilization and an economic contribution to the business. Building them could also tie up capital before any matching revenue arrives. That is a possible risk, not an explanation for slower profit growth that the quarterly figures support.

The next hard checkpoint is the heavy-truck swap network. Reuters reported Tuesday that CATL aims for 900 such stations in China by year-end, with 2,000 targeted by 2027 and 10,000 over the longer term — rollout goals, not installed totals. Hitting the year-end figure would demonstrate infrastructure progress; whether it produces stronger earnings would have to show up separately.

The sell side trims, but stays on board

Valuation got a nudge as well. Citi cut its target price for CATL's Hong Kong-listed shares to HK$732.0 from HK$765.0 on Tuesday, keeping its buy rating, Dow Jones Newswires reported. The change touched the target, not the recommendation.

Weighing it all up: as long as CATL keeps moving on execution and the extra business feeds through to profit more convincingly, the bullish case holds together. If the distance between revenue and earnings growth becomes entrenched, even a bigger network will not settle doubts about earning power. The year-end truck-station target is the next thing to count — the real test remains what those stations earn.
