CATL's European Storage Alliance Takes Shape as Buyback Nears RMB 5.36 Billion
Published on 11/05/2026 at 13:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL has repurchased 19,605,919 A-shares for RMB 5.36 billion through 31 October, the company disclosed on Monday — a figure that remains well short of the RMB 20 billion to RMB 40 billion range set out in its announced buyback plan. The acquired stock represents 0.4447% of its A-share capital.
The buyback update landed alongside a burst of partnership news. CATL and Blue Vector Intelligent Technology unveiled strategic agreements and a product collaboration under which CATL will develop a bespoke aviation battery for the SKYLA V30 aircraft and serve as its exclusive battery partner — a mandate covering both custom development and exclusivity.
Two days earlier, on 29 October, CATL had struck a strategic cooperation with Dongfeng Motor to build an ecosystem linking batteries, vehicles and energy services. Ultrafast charging, battery swapping and joint work abroad all fall within that arrangement. CATL also used the same day to launch its TENER+ energy storage system globally and to sign three memoranda of understanding in Australia with Hitachi Energy, EPEC Group and UNSW Sydney.
A Storage Pact That Goes Beyond the Cell
The most recent move came on Tuesday, when CATL, Ampace and Octopus Energy agreed to collaborate on home storage and intelligent energy management in Europe. Octopus's markets — Britain, France and Spain among them — form the initial target. What matters more than the geography is the division of labour: CATL supplies battery technology and support along the supply chain, Ampace handles cell and storage-system development and manufacturing, and Octopus contributes its digital platform, dynamic tariffs and virtual power plant technology.
That split carries strategic logic. Delivering a cell is supplying a component; pairing it with tariffs and controls is building an energy system. The caveat is that the allocation of tasks says nothing yet about which partner captures the economic benefit. Models, capacities, pricing and launch dates are all undisclosed, and sodium-ion cells along with high-energy-density, long-life batteries are still only being examined as candidate technologies — a search space, not a product catalogue.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
Founder and CEO Zeng Yuqun used a forum at Shanghai Jiao Tong University to argue for sharing technological innovation and industrial capabilities internationally, while production chief Ni Jun stressed the balance between globalisation and localisation and more efficient supply chains. The European storage partnership gives that abstract strategy a concrete shape — though not yet a proven economic case.
Industry Margins Flash a Warning
Minmetals Securities' sector analysis explains why caution is warranted. Net profit across the lithium battery industry rose 21% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, but fell 13% from the prior quarter. Industry net margin came in at 7.0%, down 1.9 percentage points from the second quarter. These are sector figures, not CATL's own, yet they illustrate that growing demand can coexist with weaker near-term earnings — and that a system-level approach only pays off if additional services generate additional value.
Sentiment received a separate push on Monday. Reuters reported gains in Chinese cleantech stocks after US Democratic election victories, with investors betting on stronger support from a Democrat-controlled Congress. No actual opening for Chinese exports is assured: US tariffs of 25% on Chinese grid batteries remain in place, leaving the political hope a mood factor rather than a new commercial foundation.
Legal Relief in Hungary, a 2027 Solid-State Target
On the legal front, a Hungarian court dismissed residents' objections to the permit for CATL's Debrecen battery plant on 30 October, as Reuters reported, finding no procedural violations — removing a regulatory overhang from the project.
Further out, CATL reaffirmed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's interactive platform on 27 October that trial small-series production of sulphide-based solid-state batteries is scheduled to begin in 2027. That remains a manufacturing plan, not a production start that has already happened.
For the equity, the strategic direction is legible: deeper integration rather than simply more capacity. Whether that translates into a more durable earnings model will be judged on products, terms and an actual market launch — none of which the memoranda yet supply.
