CATL has spent the past two weeks rolling out one initiative after another — a flagship storage system in Australia, a solid-state production timeline, battery-swap alliances and a fresh supply pact. The breadth is impressive. The earnings math is not.

At the All Energy Australia 2026 exhibition, the Chinese battery giant gave its TENER+ large-scale storage system its global debut. The launch came wrapped in memoranda of understanding with Hitachi Energy, EPEC Group and UNSW Sydney covering project execution, grid connection and training. What those documents do not contain is any published purchase commitment or contract value. They signal willingness to cooperate; they do not yet represent bankable business.

That distinction matters because CATL's most recent quarterly scorecard, released roughly two weeks ago, laid out the company's central tension in plain numbers. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 jumped 58.6%, while net profit advanced just 14.5%. More business did not translate into a comparable lift in earnings.

Caixin attributed the squeeze to a less profitable product mix, a consumption tax on lithium batteries and reduced export VAT rebates. For TENER+, the implication is straightforward: strong sales would bolster the growth story, but whether that converts into better bottom-line results depends on pricing terms and the cost burden attached to each deal.

Two Brokerages, Two Different Shades of Caution

Analysts have been recalibrating. Morgan Stanley cut its rating on CATL's Hong Kong-listed shares from "Overweight" to "Equal-weight" on Tuesday, citing sharper-than-expected swings in product mix and pressure on per-unit profit. The bank kept an "Overweight" stance on the A-shares but trimmed its price target to RMB 335.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

DBS took a gentler route on Monday, reaffirming its buy recommendation while lowering its A-share target to RMB 438. The brokerage pointed to higher taxes weighing on profitability. Its view stayed constructive, though with a clear caveat on earnings expectations.

Read together, the two moves do not write off CATL's growth prospects. They underscore a narrower point: the composition of the business — not simply its expansion — will determine its value. New applications alone will not fix a margin problem.

Australia as a Bridge From Announcement to Contract

In the best case, the Australian partners help CATL move TENER+ from product launch to concrete projects. The agreed workstreams stretch beyond the storage units themselves, and the pairing of project execution with grid connection could prove useful if the memoranda harden into binding orders. Until then, investors treating the Australian agreements as an immediate earnings contributor would be running ahead of confirmed fact.

The same day as the Melbourne launch, CATL signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Dongfeng Motor in Wuhan. The two companies plan to deepen collaboration on ultra-fast-charging and swappable batteries, related service offerings, and overseas markets and brand marketing — a second growth lever alongside stationary storage.

Swap Networks, a Solid-State Date and a 10–12 GWh Plant

CATL's swap ambitions extend well past passenger cars. On October 20 it unveiled the Tianxing II battery platform for heavy trucks and announced an expansion of its Qiji swap network, targeting 900 truck battery-swap stations across China by the end of 2026 and 2,000 by 2027, according to Reuters. The company also presented a battery for extended electric range on October 20, alongside an updated swap solution for heavy commercial vehicles built with QIJI. CATL said the agreements signed at that event covered 13,000 units, without naming the buyers.

Two days later, on October 22, CATL and BAIC signed a strategic pact aimed at one million compatible vehicles. BAIC will introduce models from several of its brands into CATL's Chocolate battery-swap system and open its dealer network to help build swap stations — combining vehicle integration with infrastructure support.

A supply-side agreement followed with the SERES Group on October 10, covering battery deliveries for the full AITO model lineup plus cooperation on charging services and overseas markets. It includes a planned second phase of the "Plant in Plant" project with annual capacity of 10–12 GWh.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

On the technology front, CATL said Wednesday on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's interactive investor platform that it expects small-series production of all-solid-state batteries in 2027. The statement, reported in the media, concerned progress at its pilot site for sulfide-based solid-state cells in Hefei. CATL added that it will continue research and development in the field, with the announced production outlook limited to small volumes.

What Would Actually Change the Story

The bull case, then, rests on more than a single product announcement — several initiatives could reinforce one another. But a re-rating would require evidence of both durable business and a more convincing earnings trajectory.

The bear argument is that CATL keeps growing briskly without improving the quality of its profit. Recent results show the risk is not theoretical: an unfavorable product mix and added tax burdens can blunt the benefit of rising revenue. Binding purchase commitments and solid economic terms on TENER+ would be the decisive next disclosures. Whether they arrive is an open question — the memoranda are a starting point, not proof.

The 2027 small-series timeline for all-solid-state cells offers another marker to watch, though it remains an expectation rather than a commitment. Between now and then, the test for investors is whether CATL's sprawling product pipeline turns into profitable business — not merely how many new applications it can open up.
