CATL's Revenue Jump Comes With a Heavier Bill: Margins, Taxes and Working Capital Weigh on the Quarter
Published on 10/21/2026 at 07:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL can still move product at a furious clip. What it is finding harder to do is turn that volume into profit and cash at the same rate. Shares in the battery giant fell 10% today, the morning after third-quarter 2026 results landed below expectations, and the sell-off reflects a question investors are now asking with more urgency: how much of the expansion actually reaches the bottom line?
A 14.5% Profit Gain That Wasn't Enough
Net profit for the quarter rose 14.5% to 21.25 billion yuan, against consensus of roughly 26 billion yuan. The shortfall is not a contraction — earnings still grew — but the size of the gap between result and forecast is what stung. Revenue climbed 58.6% to 165.2 billion yuan, also short of expectations, meaning sales expanded far faster than profit.
Media reports point to a less favourable product mix, with business shifting toward lower-margin offerings, compounded by China's consumption tax on batteries, reduced export VAT rebates and impairment charges. Competition in the battery market and cooling growth in Chinese car sales have also been cited as drags on earnings momentum. The upshot: a bigger top line does not automatically offset thinner product margins, and the tax and write-down effects make it harder to judge the business on revenue growth alone.
Costs Outpacing Sales Over Nine Months
The pressure is visible across the year to date. In the first nine months of 2026, cost of sales rose 61.61% while revenue advanced 56.19%. Gross margin slipped to 22.72% from 25.31% a year earlier. A weaker financial result added to the strain, with CATL attributing a decline in net finance income chiefly to foreign-exchange losses.

Where the Cash Went
Growth has also been consuming capital. Operating cash flow fell 23.60% over the nine-month period, while receivables stood 47.78% above the start of the year at the end of September and inventories rose 53.15%. Rising receivables and stockpiles tie up funds that do not flow straight back as available liquidity — a reminder that accounting profit and cash generation are not the same thing.
That said, the picture is not one of acute funding stress. At the close of the reporting period, CATL held cash and tradable financial assets totalling more than 430 billion yuan, a buffer that buys time but does not remove the operational task of converting a growing business back into cash inflows.
Storage as a Possible Margin Lever
One route to a healthier mix runs through energy storage. In the first half of 2026, the storage system business posted a gross margin of 23.96%, against 20.63% for power battery systems — more profitable at the gross level in that period. Storage revenue jumped 87.54% in the same half. CATL has not yet published standalone storage revenue for the third quarter, and a heavier weighting toward storage is no guarantee of a group-wide margin recovery.

New Products and Partnerships as a Counterweight
Alongside the numbers, CATL is pushing fresh growth projects. It unveiled a new generation of batteries for heavy trucks and said it will expand its battery-swapping network. On 10 October, it agreed a long-term strategic partnership with SERES covering battery supply for AITO, capacity expansion, fast charging and battery services, as well as development of overseas markets.
Those initiatives widen the company's commercial runway, but they are no evidence that margin pressure is already easing. The question for shareholders is less whether CATL can grow — the figures show it can — than whether it can rein in costs and capital tie-up while letting storage growth support profitability. Until revenue momentum, margins and cash flow start pointing the same way again, the stock is likely to be judged on quality, not speed.
