Coherent's stock took a 12.51% hit on Thursday, according to media reports, as doubts over AI spending expectations and a round of analyst target cuts weighed on the shares during a broad technology selloff. The size of the move has put a single question front and center for investors: can the company's upcoming results justify the valuation multiples the market has been carrying?

The decline cannot be pinned on any one company announcement. Reports pointed to general weakness across technology and AI names, alongside cautious positioning ahead of the next quarterly report. That framing matters, because it separates a sector-wide reassessment of AI-related infrastructure from any company-specific deterioration — though it would be just as much of an overreach to read the selloff as an all-clear.

Target cuts carry a mixed message

The analyst revisions tell a more nuanced story than the headline price action. On Wednesday, Susquehanna lowered its price target on Coherent from $425 to $350 while keeping its "Positive" rating. The same pattern showed up elsewhere: on October 19, another assessment cut its target from $395 to $275 and held on to its buy recommendation.

A third adjustment, on October 15, came with an unchanged neutral rating. B. Riley also trimmed its target that day, taking it from $345 to $297.

Taken together, the cuts point to a more cautious view of valuation without a wholesale retreat from the stock. That distinction is critical for investors. A lower target reflects an analyst's revised expectations; it is not a company disclosure on revenue, earnings or guidance. Nor does a maintained positive rating offer any guarantee that the prior valuation was sufficiently protected.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Coherent?

Thirty days, one big repricing

The stock's 30-day performance of -29% shows how far sentiment has already shifted. On its own, though, that drop proves neither a bargain nor an overshoot. A lower price does not answer the question of which business expectations are appropriate.

A valuation note published Wednesday highlighted the importance of photonic components for the next generation of AI networking, while also flagging that expectations embedded in valuations were considered high. An attractive technological role does not automatically justify every growth assumption — which is why operating confirmation is gaining weight for Coherent.

Drawing a hard line between "just market sentiment" and "a real company problem" is of limited use here. The first explanation can describe the immediate trigger. For the longer view, what counts is whether the business development backs up the expectations. Price action and business performance are different things, but for investors they ultimately connect.

November 4 is the date that counts

Coherent has scheduled its results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 — the quarter ended September 30 — for November 4, after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. That date matters more than another isolated look at the share chart.

Until then, the lowered targets are above all an expression of changed analyst expectations, not reported business results. The earnings release will provide a firmer basis for weighing growth and financial development against the high hopes tied to the AI buildout. What answer it delivers cannot be anticipated from the target cuts themselves.

Skepticism about the valuation is warranted; a verdict of business collapse would be premature. By the same token, the idea that the decline alone makes Coherent attractive does not hold up. The more convincing stance is sober evidence-gathering: neither the earlier price level nor the positive analyst vote should set the benchmark — the durability of the business development should.
