Commerzbank's Record Nine-Month Profit Meets a Deposit War It Can't Fully Outrun
Published on 11/05/2026 at 14:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank shares fell on Tuesday after the lender trimmed its interest-income guidance, a revision that overshadowed an otherwise powerful set of third-quarter figures. The stock was down 2.3%, with one report putting the daily move at -2.8%, as investors focused on a narrower revenue outlook rather than the bottom line.
At the heart of the disappointment is deposit competition. The Frankfurt-based bank now expects net interest income of around EUR 8.5 billion for 2026, down from roughly EUR 8.6 billion previously, citing tougher rivalry for customer deposits. That single revision carries weight because interest income has been a key earnings engine — yet it does not extend to the group's headline targets.
Profit Goal Survives the Downgrade
Commerzbank reaffirmed its full-year ambitions: a net profit of at least EUR 3.4 billion and revenues of about EUR 13.2 billion for 2026. The distinction matters. A softer interest-income line has not, so far, translated into a lower net result target, leaving investors to weigh a weaker revenue mix against an intact profit pledge.
The quarterly performance itself was robust. Net profit for the third quarter of 2026 climbed 45% to EUR 859 million, while operating profit advanced 25% to EUR 1,312 million. According to the company, the period also delivered the best nine-month result in its history, with net profit of EUR 2.7 billion for the first nine months of 2026 — a 41% increase year on year.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Those numbers, however, did not set the tone for the session. dpa-AFX reported that the quarterly figures came in slightly below expectations, and a downbeat first assessment from RBC Capital Markets added to the pressure.
RBC Flags Disappointing Trends
RBC analyst Anke Reingen described the business trends in the third quarter as disappointing, singling out the lowered full-year interest-income target for particular criticism. She kept her "Sector Perform" rating and a price target of EUR 41, steering attention toward earnings prospects rather than the profit jump alone.
Her stance captures the tension running through the release: a confirmed profit forecast sitting alongside a reduced interest outlook. Whether Commerzbank can hit its result targets despite the intensifying deposit battle is now the question that will shape how the stock is valued from here.
Commerzbank at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For shareholders, the picture is split down the middle. The bank has grown earnings sharply and stood by its annual profit goal, but the deposit war is capping expectations for interest income — and that constraint, not the record nine-month result, was what drove the share price on the day.
