Commerzbank Sticks to Its 3.4 Billion Euro Profit Pledge as Deposit Battle Bites
Published on 11/07/2026 at 03:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank has reaffirmed its full-year net profit target of at least 3.4 billion euros, even as it trimmed its net interest income forecast for 2026 to around 8.5 billion euros from roughly 8.6 billion. The Frankfurt lender blamed tougher competition for deposits for the downgrade, a concession that puts its earnings promise under closer scrutiny.
The bank also held firm to its revenue target of about 13.2 billion euros, according to its presentation of results on Thursday. Both goals now stand alongside a reduced expectation for the interest income that has long been the backbone of its profitability.
A record nine months behind the pledge
Figures released with the update give the confirmed target a solid foundation. Net profit for the first nine months of 2026 reached 2.67 billion euros, a 41 percent increase on the same period a year earlier, as reported by Reuters. Operating profit climbed to 4.04 billion euros, up 17 percent year on year — a smaller proportional advance than the bottom line.
The third quarter alone delivered 859 million euros in net profit, 45 percent higher than a year before. That quarterly surge, combined with the nine-month haul, gives management room to argue that the interest income shortfall can be absorbed elsewhere in the P&L.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Whether that argument holds is now the central question for investors. If the bank can offset the softer interest contribution, the profit target remains a credible anchor for valuation. Should deposit pressure seep into the overall earnings plan, the more bullish case would need rebuilding from scratch.
Analysts split on what the numbers are worth
The research community offered divergent verdicts following the quarterly update. ODDO BHF raised its price target to 47 euros from 45 and kept a positive rating on the stock. Deutsche Bank Research, by contrast, left its target at 42 euros and maintained a hold recommendation.
That gap — five euros between the two houses — frames the choice facing shareholders. The optimistic camp leans on delivered profits and a reaffirmed goal; the cautious side points to a bank that has already had to lower its interest income expectation once.
Momentum in the share price offered little comfort on Friday, with the stock down 0.8 percent following Thursday's results release.
Commerzbank at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
UniCredit's offer still waiting in the wings
Beyond the earnings debate, Commerzbank addressed the takeover bid from UniCredit. The bank expects the offer to complete in the coming months, though further regulatory approvals are still outstanding. Management said it is convinced it can create value together with the Italian lender — a statement that keeps the door open to the combination while the paperwork works its way through the approvals process.
For now, the operational story and the corporate one run in parallel. The bank must preserve its earnings strength while deposit competition persists, and the true test will be whether the confirmed annual target is actually met. A robust delivery would bolster the more optimistic valuation; added strain on the profit outlook would argue for restraint.
