DAX Edges Off Fresh Peak as Thin Volumes and US CPI Take Centre Stage

Germany's blue-chip index touched yet another milestone on Wednesday morning, only to surrender those gains as traders braced for the afternoon's US inflation print. The DAX climbed to 26,573.50 points in early trade — a new all-time high — before drifting back to 26,331.07 points, a decline of 0.2 percent from Tuesday's close of 26,391.42 points. That leaves the benchmark just 0.9 percent shy of its freshly minted record.
The pullback, however, tells only part of the story. What makes this session unusual is not the price action but the near-absence of it. Turnover has been extraordinarily thin, with only around 40 million DAX shares changing hands across Monday and Tuesday combined — a level matched on just two other days this year. Thomas Altmann, market strategist at QC Partners, interprets the lull as a sign that fresh buyers are scarce and the rally is being sustained largely by an absence of profit-taking rather than by new capital flooding in.
Inflation Data Holds the Key
All eyes are fixed on 2:30 pm Frankfurt time, when Washington releases July consumer price figures. Economists expect the annual rate to cool to 3.4 percent from 3.5 percent the prior month, with core CPI seen rising 0.2 percent month-on-month. The consensus range in some forecasts stretches to 3.5 percent, with the core rate pegged at around 2.5 percent.
The stakes are elevated because the Federal Reserve finds itself in an awkward spot. Following a weak jobs report showing a loss of 23,000 positions, market pricing for a September rate cut had slipped to roughly 40 percent. A softer-than-expected CPI reading would revive those bets, while a print above 3.4 percent would embolden the hawkish camp around Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who have cautioned against premature easing. Interestingly, derivatives markets now assign roughly a 50 percent probability to a rate hike in September — an unusual scenario for a central bank that has lately leaned toward looser policy.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DAX?
Adding to the nervousness is the oil market. Brent crude is trading near USD 89 per barrel, with WTI around USD 83–84, supported by escalating tensions in the Iran conflict, attacks by Houthi militants, and a fresh North Korean missile test.
A Rally Built on Shaky Fundamentals
What makes the DAX's record run notable is the backdrop against which it is unfolding. German GDP expanded just 0.2 percent quarter-on-quarter in Q2, unemployment stood at 6.4 percent in July, and the ifo Institute projects growth of only 0.8 percent over the next two years. European gas storage sits at 58 percent — 16 percentage points below the five-year average — while German facilities are at just 47 percent. Berlin has rejected emergency purchases and lowered its winter target from 90 to 80 percent.
None of this has derailed the advance. The rally is being carried by select heavyweights: Siemens Energy climbed more than 2 percent after positive quarterly figures from its Gamesa wind unit and an upgrade to "Outperform" by Bernstein Research pushed the stock above EUR 165. Chipmaker Infineon benefited from renewed AI enthusiasm sparked by strong order numbers from cloud provider Coreweave. In the MDax, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems jumped after raising its guidance, while Tui slid on its earnings release. At Tuesday's Xetra close, 22 DAX constituents advanced against 18 decliners, with Scout24 and RWE among the leaders and Zalando, Qiagen, and Merck at the bottom, losing between 2.25 and 2.57 percent.
Elsewhere in the corporate sphere, Bechtle, Hannover RĂĽck, K+S, and Brenntag all reported figures. The reinsurer continued to feel the pinch from falling prices in contract renewals, posting a second-quarter profit decline while reaffirming its outlook.
Technicals Point to Overbought Conditions
The chart picture is starting to flash warnings. With a relative strength index of 73, the DAX is technically overbought — a caution flag for near-term pullbacks, even if it does not in itself signal a trend reversal. The index now trades roughly 5 percent above its 50-day moving average, underscoring the velocity of the recent advance.
More immediately, the slip below 26,356 points carries significance: that level coincides with the 20-period moving average on the four-hour chart, which had been underpinning the short-term uptrend. With the index now at 26,331, it sits just beneath this support. A sustained break lower would bring the 50-period average at 26,199 points into focus, and only a breach of that would open the door to a deeper correction toward the 200-period line at 25,415. On the upside, resistance stands at 26,444, 26,515, and 26,615 — levels that look difficult to reach without a fresh catalyst.
DAX at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
External Headwinds Accumulate
Overseas cues have offered little support. The S&P 500 fell 0.32 percent, the Dow Jones lost 0.34 percent, and the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.40 percent, while Asian markets in Japan and South Korea recovered in morning trade. Alphabet weighed on US sentiment, shedding 3.6 percent after Demis Hassabis stepped down as CEO of Google DeepMind to serve as chairman, with AI veteran Jeff Dean also departing the company.
Domestic data added another wrinkle: German HICP inflation ticked up to 2.8 percent in July.
The afternoon's CPI release will determine the near-term path. A reading at or below expectations could see the DAX reclaim its lost support and make another run at the record. A number significantly above 3.4 percent, by contrast, would reignite debate over tighter Fed policy and open the route toward the 26,199-point support level. Given the index's overbought condition and the thin trading volumes, the reaction to the data could be sharp — in either direction.
