Deutsche Telekom Balances Buyback Discipline With a Medical AI Breakthrough and a Trimmed T-Mobile Target

Telekom repurchased 2,945,800 shares in a week, reaching 14,005,765 since August 10, as its Prof. Valmed medical AI gains CE Class IIb certification.

Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead on two fronts that rarely appear in the same sentence: the steady mechanical work of shrinking its share count, and a push into clinical software that has just cleared a significant European regulatory hurdle.

Buyback Machine Keeps Rolling

In its sixth interim disclosure, the Bonn-based carrier reported repurchasing 2,945,800 of its own shares on the Xetra trading system over the past trading week. Since the current tranche began on August 10, the running total under the program has reached 14,005,765 shares.

The steady drain of stock from the open market reduces the freely tradable float and, on paper, lifts earnings per share for the shareholders who remain. Management frames such moves as a vote of confidence in its own earning power.

A First for German Medical AI

Away from capital measures, the group is building out specialized software and cloud offerings for business customers. Through a partnership with the startup Prof. Valmed, Telekom is backing a system for computer-assisted diagnosis and therapy in healthcare, drawing on a corpus of more than 2.5 million curated medical documents.

The application runs on a so-called RAG architecture and is the first language model in Germany to secure CE Class IIb certification. It is designed for direct integration into standard hospital information systems and physician practice software. Delivery is to be handled next through the group's own T Cloud, with all medical decisions remaining firmly in the hands of treating physicians.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

JPMorgan Trims T-Mobile US Target

Across the Atlantic, the valuation gap between Telekom and its faster-growing US subsidiary remains the central puzzle for CEO Tim Höttges. A full merger of the two units runs into resistance from European shareholders, while a complete spin-off is seen as unlikely.

The pragmatic middle path under discussion: gradually reduce the stake in T-Mobile US, freeing up capital to fund acquisitions in European markets and strengthen the earnings base at home. Market participants are watching the US operation's performance closely ahead of upcoming quarterly figures.

Ahead of those numbers, JPMorgan analyst Sebastiano C. Petti cut his price target on T-Mobile US to 260 US dollars from 275, keeping an "Overweight" rating. The US bank trimmed its growth forecast for service revenue from contract customers but still views the subsidiary's valuation at current levels as attractive.

Domestic Broadband and the Price Picture

Parallel to the North American strategic questions, the company is pushing investment in its home fixed-line network, capping a record month in German broadband buildout.

The stock added 1.1% in Xetra trading on Monday to close at 27.40 euros, though it remains below its 50-day average of 28.02 euros. In floor trading, the T-share gained 1.4% to 27.54 euros. The 52-week high of 34.35 euros is still a long way off.

Whether Telekom can close that gap depends largely on how convincingly management balances US growth against value-creating initiatives in Europe — and on how quickly software-based offerings take hold in the tightly regulated healthcare sector.
