Deutsche Telekom Bets on Clinical AI While Wall Street Trims Its Ambitions
Published on 10/28/2026 at 02:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom has spent the past two days stacking up strategic announcements — a stake in a Swedish medical-AI specialist and a managed-network venture with Rohde & Schwarz — just as analysts sharpen their pencils on the competitive threat brewing in the United States. The next hard checkpoint for investors comes on 5 November 2026, when the group reports third-quarter results.
Two initiatives, two very different stages of maturity
Through T.Capital, its strategic investment arm, the Bonn-based carrier has joined the Series-B funding round of Tandem Health. The Swedish health-tech firm builds an AI-powered assistant that handles clinical documentation, billing coding and decision support for medical staff. Telekom did not disclose the size of its commitment.
The distinction matters: this is a financial stake in somebody else's product, not the launch of a Telekom medical tool. Tandem's software is already in use at more than 10,000 healthcare facilities across 14 European countries, according to the company, and is integrated into roughly 130 patient-record systems. It also carries Class IIa medical-device certification under the EU's medical-device regulation — evidence of deep embedding in clinical workflows, though not yet proof of durable economics.
The Rohde & Schwarz collaboration sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the two partners have unveiled a fully managed corporate-network service, with the network technology engineered in Germany and cloud operations run domestically. Launch is slated for some point in 2026. One is a signed cheque; the other is a promise of a product.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Growth is one thing, earnings quality another
Tandem's ambitions are lofty. CEO Lukas Saari wants to give Europe's healthcare professionals back a billion working hours, and the company is developing additional tools for patient triage, appointment scheduling and administration. T-Systems, for its part, insists that any AI it deploys must be trustworthy and secure.
Turning that installed base into a genuine value driver for Telekom, however, requires more than user counts. The group's own second-quarter figures illustrate the gap between top-line expansion and bottom-line delivery: revenue climbed to EUR 29.93 billion from EUR 28.67 billion a year earlier, yet earnings per share slipped to EUR 0.51 from EUR 0.54. Those numbers describe the parent company, not Tandem, but they set the bar against which any new growth narrative will be judged.
Verizon's momentum and a split verdict from the banks
Competitive pressure in the US has been weighing on the stock. Verizon reported 406,000 net new mobile contract customers for the third quarter, and media coverage linked that figure — alongside a Barclays target cut — to weakness in Telekom shares.
Barclays lowered its price target to EUR 32 from EUR 35 on 20 October while keeping its "Overweight" rating, flagging satellite technology and agentic AI as the risks on its radar. JPMorgan followed a day later, reaffirming "Overweight" with a EUR 38 target. The two houses agree on direction and diverge on magnitude — a lower number from Barclays is not a change of heart, merely a more cautious valuation.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
What to watch
T-Mobile US's quarterly report, expected imminently, will be scoured for signs of how the tougher American landscape is biting. Telekom's own third-quarter release follows on 5 November 2026.
Neither document will settle Tandem's long-term fate. They will, however, show how solid the underlying business is — and that is the yardstick against which the new AI venture should be measured: a possible supplement to future growth, not a substitute for convincing results.
