Deutsche Telekom Gains as T-Mobile US Profit Jumps 27%, but Analysts See Few Fresh Surprises

Deutsche Telekom shares rose 2.0% on Wednesday, lifted by unexpectedly strong quarterly figures from its US subsidiary T-Mobile US. The question for investors is whether that momentum can outlast the session — and on that point, the sell side is notably measured.

T-Mobile US reported net income of USD 3.5 billion for the third quarter of 2026, a 27% increase year on year. Adjusted free cash flow for the quarter came in at USD 5.1 billion, up 5% from the prior-year period. The carrier also raised its full-year guidance for adjusted free cash flow to a range of USD 18.7–18.8 billion — a target, not a result.

That distinction matters. An upgraded outlook can build confidence, but it only hardens into a durable case once subsequent quarters confirm it. The same logic applies to the operating detail: T-Mobile US said postpaid customer growth and average revenue per postpaid account both beat its original expectations, while it added 274,000 net postpaid accounts and posted adjusted EBITDA of USD 9.6 billion in the quarter. Customer momentum of that kind gives the raised cash-flow target more substance than a single earnings line alone.

JPMorgan, for its part, kept its "Overweight" rating and EUR 38 price target on Deutsche Telekom in a note dated Tuesday. Analyst Akhil Dattani wrote that the T-Mobile US figures and the adjusted annual targets were largely in line with expectations — a caveat that tempers any reading of the US results as a fresh re-rating catalyst.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Barclays offers a more cautious counterpoint. On October 20 the bank cut its price target on the stock from EUR 35 to EUR 32 while reaffirming its "Overweight" rating, pairing a lower valuation with a still-positive recommendation.

Sentiment has also been shaped by corporate strategy. According to Bloomberg, Deutsche Telekom has shelved plans for a full merger with T-Mobile US for now, a pause investors read as relief from potential dilution risk. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that a later offer remains possible — so the pause is not a final abandonment. Any lift from reduced transaction risk is a different animal from an operational improvement, and could prove shorter-lived.

Separately, the group closed out its AutoLog project on Wednesday alongside Volkswagen, Unikie and BIBA. Over more than two years, the partners tested automated vehicle movements under real logistics conditions at Emden using public 5G and edge computing — a live industrial deployment rather than a lab exercise. It is an operational step forward, though a completed pilot is not the same as a commercial contract, and no revenue contribution can be inferred from it.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A separate network effort sits at an earlier stage. On October 21, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia reported lab results for AI-based channel estimation showing 10% to 15% higher uplink throughput, with a field test on commercial systems still to come. The two announcements represent different points on the development curve and should not be read as equally mature.

The next hard checkpoint is November 5, when Deutsche Telekom publishes its third-quarter 2026 report. Only then can investors weigh the US performance against the group as a whole. The merger pause may blunt near-term risk; lasting confidence, however, has to come from the business itself. Wednesday's advance opens that prospect without settling it.
