Deutsche Telekom Launches Global eSIM Travel Platform as Buyback Debate and Sector Pressure Shape the Story

Telekom rolls out eSIM travel data for 200+ destinations, extends fiber to 9,500 premises, as Elliott pushes buybacks and Morgan Stanley cuts Orange.

Deutsche Telekom is pushing beyond its traditional carrier role, unveiling a standalone eSIM-based travel data service that targets international travelers in more than 200 destinations. The Bonn-based group launched T-Travel on Monday, marking a deliberate move to court consumers who are not yet Telekom subscribers.

The platform lets travelers book flexible data packages abroad without swapping physical SIM cards, opening a new revenue stream in the digital roaming market and widening the group's addressable audience well beyond its home base. It is a scale play as much as a product launch: by inviting non-customers in, the DAX heavyweight expands its potential user pool across foreign markets.

Network Build-Out Runs Alongside Digital Push

The travel service is not the only item on the agenda. Telekom also confirmed on Thursday that it will extend fiber coverage to roughly 9,500 households and businesses in Waldkirch, in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg. The twin-track approach — scalable digital platforms on one side, refreshed fixed-line infrastructure on the other — reflects a strategy of pairing new earnings sources with a fortified domestic foundation.

Elliott Turns Up the Heat on Capital Returns

Shareholder-level pressure is mounting in parallel. Roughly three weeks ago it emerged that activist investor Elliott Investment Management had built a sizable stake in Deutsche Telekom. According to Bloomberg and Handelsblatt, Elliott is pressing the company to rule out any merger involving its US subsidiary T-Mobile US and is instead calling for beefed-up share buybacks to lift shareholder value. The existing repurchase program — announced just over a month ago, with the stock down 3.3% since — remains a key reference point for investors weighing how management will deploy capital.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Orange Downgrade Ripples Across European Telecoms

Sentiment in the sector took a hit late last week. On Friday, Morgan Stanley cut its rating on French rival Orange to "Underweight" and trimmed its price target to EUR 15, citing political uncertainty in France, fierce competition in the Spanish market and broader sector leverage. The call weighed on telecom names across Europe, with Vodafone and BT Group also losing ground as investors grew skittish about margin pressure and rising interest costs at capital-intensive network operators.

Operational Backing Remains Solid

Beneath the market noise, the group's fundamentals look sturdy. Management has raised its guidance for 2026 free cash flow AL to around EUR 20.0 billion, with adjusted EBITDA AL projected at roughly EUR 47.5 billion. In the second quarter of 2026, adjusted net profit climbed 11.1% organically to EUR 2.8 billion. Telekom is also advancing expansion in selected European markets, with a transaction still subject to Polish antitrust approval set to turn T-Mobile Polska into a fully integrated telecom operator.

Monday Trading Steadies After Friday's Slide

As the new trading week opened, Deutsche Telekom shares managed to shake off the recent sector drag. The stock was quoted at EUR 27.25, up 0.4% on the day.

What's Next on the Calendar

Attention now shifts to two management dates this autumn. On Monday, October 5, the company will host an investor day dedicated to the opportunities and potential of artificial intelligence. Third-quarter 2026 results are scheduled for Thursday, November 5.
