Europe's biggest telecom operators are exploring a joint push into space-based mobile connectivity, with Deutsche Telekom among the players in early-stage talks over a shared bid for European Union satellite spectrum. The proposed consortium would also develop so-called direct-to-mobile services, letting ordinary smartphones link up with orbiting satellites without any extra hardware. That would help close coverage gaps in remote regions and keep emergency calls alive outside the reach of standard terrestrial networks.

No binding agreements have been reached, and the discussions remain at a preliminary stage. The four heavyweight carriers involved would pool resources to position themselves in the bidding process for the European frequencies.

The satellite initiative sits alongside a broader set of strategic moves at the Bonn-based group. On the personnel front, Deutsche Telekom is reshuffling key departments to prepare for future growth areas. Mladen Mitic takes over as Chief Product & Digital Officer on October 1, 2026, with Jan Hofmeyr following a month later, on November 1, 2026, as the new board member for product and technology. Hofmeyr brings experience from AWS, Comcast and Microsoft.

There is long-term clarity at the top of the finance function as well. CFO Christian Illek will leave Deutsche Telekom in April 2027 for age-related reasons, with Dhananjay Mirchandani succeeding him on May 1, 2027. Investors will get an early read on the company's technology priorities on October 5, 2026, when the group hosts a dedicated investor day on the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Capital Allocation Debate Intensifies

While the leadership transition takes shape, how the company spends its money remains the dominant topic in the market. According to a Bloomberg report, Elliott Investment Management has built a significant stake and is pressing for greater value creation. The activist is urging management to forgo a possible full merger with the profitable subsidiary T-Mobile US and to expand share buybacks.

The group had already responded in August, extending its running repurchase program by up to EUR 3 billion through the end of the year. In the same month, Deutsche Telekom strengthened its European fixed-line business, agreeing with Macquarie Asset Management to take full ownership of Polish fiber operator Fiberhost and provider Inea for a company value of around EUR 1 billion.

Strategic investments are underpinned by operating earnings power. The Bonn group raised its full-year guidance for fiscal 2026 and now expects free cash flow AL of around EUR 20.0 billion. At the same time, the volume for the current share buyback program was increased to as much as EUR 5 billion.

Shares Under Pressure Ahead of Q3 Report

In today's trading, the stock is down 1.0% at EUR 27.13, well below its 52-week high of EUR 34.35. The pullback follows losses last week, leaving the DAX-listed shares at a level that keeps the debate over capital allocation and acquisitions front and center.

Whether the Bonn group can maintain its course in the second half will become clearer on November 5, 2026, when third-quarter results are due. Until then, the market's read on the interplay between network buildout, technology investment and shareholder returns will hinge largely on the management's strategic signals.
