DroneShield's Adelaide R&D Hub Opens as RfRecon Lands Its First Military Buyer

DroneShield opened an Adelaide R&D center and won a first RfRecon order, but 2026 revenue guidance of AUD 250-270M trails analyst consensus.

DroneShield's platform strategy is broadening on two fronts at once: a fresh research and development site in South Australia, and the first uniformed customer for its RfRecon reconnaissance system. The Australian counter-drone specialist confirmed that a longstanding military client in Western Europe has placed an order for RfRecon, a deal management describes as immaterial in dollar terms but strategically significant for the years ahead.

The news broke alongside the formal opening of the company's new Adelaide research center, inaugurated by South Australia's Minister for Defence and Space Industries, Chris Picton. The facility adds dry laboratories and development space for electronic warfare, embedded systems, software and sensor work, complementing DroneShield's existing operations in Sydney. CEO Angus Bean pointed to Adelaide's standing as an Australian technology and defense hub as the rationale for the location.

From Radio-Frequency Detection to a Laser Layer

Adelaide's expanded capacity is meant to accelerate work across DroneShield's core portfolio: radio-frequency sensing, electronic warfare systems and the command-and-control software that ties them together. The company is also opening its counter-UAS architecture to third-party effectors. More than a month ago it announced that AIM Defence's high-energy laser effector, Fractl, would join the platform — adding a direct optical strike option to a stack that has until now leaned primarily on RF detection and electronic countermeasures.

RfRecon, meanwhile, has already been placed with select end users in Europe and the United States and has been put through its paces at a major international defense exercise. Management expects sales of the platform to gather pace through 2027 and puts the long-term addressable global market for the technology at USD 1 billion to 3 billion annually.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

DroneSentry-X Mk2 Cleared for US Infantry Squad Vehicle

Field integration is advancing in parallel. Roughly a week ago, the US military completed installation, acceptance and operational fielding of the DroneSentry-X Mk2 counter-drone system on Infantry Squad Vehicles under the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 program. The milestone moves DroneShield's hardware onto a mobile platform in active US service.

Guidance Trails the Analyst Consensus

For all the operational momentum, the financial picture is more complicated. DroneShield is guiding for calendar 2026 revenue of AUD 250 million to 270 million — well short of the roughly AUD 323 million analysts had penciled in. Secured revenue for 2026 already stands at AUD 251 million, with a further AUD 46 million booked for the following year and beyond. Europe remains the largest sales region, contributing about 52 percent of first-half revenue.

Potential large contracts involving partners such as Anduril, Nokia and COBBS have yet to be converted into firm revenue. In its first-half report roughly a month ago, DroneShield posted a 74 percent revenue increase to AUD 125.8 million while recording an adjusted EBITDA loss of AUD 12.4 million.

A Wide Divide on Valuation

Analysts are split accordingly. Bell Potter carries a buy rating with a price target of AUD 2.40, while Jefferies recommends selling with a target of just AUD 1.45.

In German trading the shares changed hands at EUR 1.00 on Thursday, down 1.9 percent on the day. The stock has lost 44 percent since the start of the year and sits far below its 52-week high of EUR 3.79. Whether the Adelaide build-out and the early RfRecon orders can mature into contracts large enough to close the gap with original market expectations is now the central question for investors.
