DroneShield is widening its engineering footprint at home while trying to convince investors that a bulging order book can be turned into profit. The Australian counter-drone specialist confirmed it is standing up a new research and development hub in Adelaide, a move it says deepens its commitment to the technology and defence sector in South Australia.

The facility is intended to speed up work on next-generation countermeasures, sharpening the company's ability to respond to evolving threats from unmanned aerial systems. It marks an expansion of DroneShield's domestic R&D capacity rather than a shift away from its existing operations.

Contracted revenue anchors the 2026 outlook

On the commercial side, the company has spent recent weeks firming up visibility for the year ahead. As of 8 September, DroneShield reported $251M in contracted revenue for fiscal 2026, putting it inside the $250M to $270M guidance range it issued for that period. A further $46M is locked in for fiscal 2027 and beyond.

That growing backlog signals healthy demand from armed forces, though it does not by itself resolve lingering questions about margins. For investors, the focus has shifted squarely to execution — how quickly and how profitably the company can convert signed contracts into delivered, revenue-generating hardware.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

DroneShield also opened a new application lane, securing a first order for its RfRecon system from an existing Western European military customer. Hardware deliveries under that deal are slated to ship before the end of 2026.

US fielding and a laser partnership

Progress on the technology front has continued in parallel. Under the JIATF-401 contract, DroneShield completed installation and acceptance of its DroneSentry-X Mk2 units on US military infantry vehicles, with a planned contract amendment covering three additional units. The vehicle-mounted configuration is designed to prove the system's fitness under live operational conditions, following earlier US military acceptance of the company's counter-drone systems.

Separately, DroneShield struck a collaboration with AIM Defence to integrate the high-energy laser effector Fractl into the open counter-drone architecture of its DroneSentry platform. That effort is initially aimed at select military and government end users.

Leadership transition and community investment

The company has also moved on the personnel front. Rebecca Lowde will take over as Chief Financial Officer effective 2 November 2026, bringing more than three decades of international leadership and finance experience. She previously served as CFO at Afterpay and MYOB, and her appointment is meant to steady financial management through the next phase of expansion and project delivery. An earlier announcement had placed her appointment on 10 September.

DroneShield rounded out its community engagement on 8 September, pledging support for the 3 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets to fund leadership and technology programs for future specialists.

Where the shares stand

The operational news has done little to lift sentiment. The stock slipped 1.4% to EUR 1.02 in Wednesday trading, with no fresh company-specific catalyst behind the move. That decline extends a difficult stretch: the shares have lost 44% since the start of the year and now sit 73% below their 52-week high, even as the contract pipeline expands.
