Equinor Hands Shell 30% of Bay du Nord as Afrodite Resource Estimate More Than Doubles
Published on 10/30/2026 at 00:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deEquinor has sold a 30% interest in the Bay du Nord project to Shell, a divestment disclosed yesterday that comes as the Norwegian energy major presses ahead with the field's development toward a final investment decision.
The transaction, struck in October, leaves Equinor's project planning intact. Alongside it, the company has been reshaping its Norwegian Continental Shelf portfolio through a strategic partnership with Aker BP, agreed on Monday, covering tight reservoirs. The alliance spans joint technology development and standardisation, resource project advancement, knowledge sharing and solutions for well stimulation.
Work under that partnership is already moving. On 22 October it awarded Aibel a pre-engineering contract for the topsides of the production vessel at the Wisting project. Concept selection is slated for late 2026, with a final investment decision targeted for the end of 2027.
Quarterly Beat Falls Short as Volumes Slip
The operational updates landed alongside third-quarter 2026 results that missed analyst expectations on the bottom line. Adjusted earnings per share came in at USD 1.20, short of the USD 1.36 consensus forecast. Adjusted operating profit reached USD 12.35 billion, while reported operating profit was USD 11.95 billion. Net profit totalled USD 2.54 billion, or USD 2.86 billion on an adjusted basis.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?
Equinor pointed to lower sales volumes as a drag: in its international business, volumes taken fell below its own share of production. On the plus side, the company raised its full-year oil and gas production growth guidance to around 4% from 3%.
The board approved a cash dividend of USD 0.39 per share for the quarter. The ex-dates are 15 February 2027 in Oslo and 16 February 2027 on the NYSE, with payment scheduled for 26 February 2027.
Buyback Finale and a Cautious Note
Equinor also announced yesterday the fourth and final share buyback tranche for 2026, set to begin today and run until no later than 1 February 2027.
Sentiment on the equity took a knock, however. According to media reports, DZ Bank downgraded Equinor yesterday to Hold from Buy, with Werner Eisenmann named as the analyst behind the call.
Equinor at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Afrodite Doubles Up
On the exploration front, Equinor delivered a sizeable upgrade. Following an appraisal well at the Afrodite gas and condensate discovery near Kvitebjørn, the company now puts recoverable resources at 77–180 million barrels of oil equivalent — more than double its previous estimate.
Equinor considers the find commercially developable and will study a subsea tie-back to Kvitebjørn. That tie-back option is now under review, even as the company has already given the discovery a positive verdict on commercial viability.
