Equinor's Visund Outage Clouds an Otherwise Upbeat Analyst Picture
Published on 11/07/2026 at 06:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deEquinor is drawing sharply divergent verdicts from two of Europe's best-known research houses, and the timing could hardly be more awkward. With the company's Visund platform dark following a fire, Danske Bank has lifted its price target on the Norwegian energy major from NOK 360 to NOK 407 while keeping its rating at "Hold," according to Bloomberg News. Morgan Stanley, by contrast, moved the other way — downgrading the stock from "Equal Weight" to "Underweight" with a target of NOK 375.
The split leaves investors weighing a more generous valuation against a more cautious stance, with no stated rationale behind Morgan Stanley's cut. Danske's higher target implies a cheaper valuation case within its analysis, though a "Hold" rating stops short of any outright endorsement; Morgan Stanley's move hardens its prior view.
A Sector-Wide Headwind From the Oil Market
Broader forces have been at work on the share price. Hopes for a de-escalation in the Iran conflict weighed on crude, and Reuters reported that Brent was heading for a weekly loss of 17% — the steepest such decline since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The sell-off across energy markets formed a sector-wide drag on Equinor, which slipped 0.6% on Friday to close at EUR 37.70.
The oil-price retreat had already been framed by Reuters on Wednesday as an unwinding of the war premium. Results from the US midterm elections had stoked hopes of a thaw in the conflict between Washington and Tehran, along with additional exports from the Middle East.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?
Output Guidance Raised, Buyback Continued
Against that unsettled backdrop, the company's own operating story has been constructive. On October 28, Equinor raised its forecast for oil and gas production growth, now expecting roughly 4% for 2026 versus 3% previously. The upgrade came alongside its quarterly results, which showed an adjusted operating profit of USD 12.35 billion for the third quarter of 2026. Net income came in at USD 2.54 billion, with adjusted earnings per share of USD 1.20.
Roughly two weeks earlier, Equinor had announced the fourth and final share buyback tranche of the year. It was scheduled to begin on October 29 and is set to conclude no later than February 1, 2027.
Visund Remains the Operational Litmus Test
The immediate question mark sits offshore. Equinor is preparing repairs to the Visund platform, where production has been halted since Wednesday's fire, Reuters reported. Gassco expects the outage to last until November 16, though that timetable could shift.
Equinor at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The facility carries a daily gas delivery capacity of 13.2 million cubic metres — about 3.7% of Norway's export capacity — and Equinor holds a 53.2% stake. Remaining personnel are handling logistics and securing the fire zone, after which repairs and restart preparations can proceed. No confirmed date has been set for resuming production or returning the crew.
For now, Danske's higher target supports Equinor's valuation case for as long as that assessment holds. Weighing against a more aggressive stance are Morgan Stanley's downgrade and the production halt, which lingers as long as Visund's return to service remains unresolved. The next concrete operational checkpoint is the announced — and still provisional — restart date.
