Eutelsat's 28% Surge Rests on Geopolitics, an Indian Paper Trail, and a Looming Revenue Test

Eutelsat shares rose 8.8% Friday, extending a 28% seven-day rally on European satellite access concerns, but OneWeb limits and the Oct 29 revenue report loom.

Eutelsat shares closed Friday at 1.78 euros, up 8.8% on the session, capping a seven-day run that has lifted the satellite operator by 28%. The trigger was not a contract win but a shift in how investors view Europe's dependence on non-European satellite capacity — a reassessment that also lifted sector peer SES.

At the heart of the move is a debate over access restrictions on external satellite providers in Eastern Europe. Oddo BHF analyst Stéphane Beyazian said Friday that discussions about limiting access to outside suppliers had benefited European operators. Bernstein's Aleksander Peterc had struck a similar note on Wednesday, arguing that uncertainty over reliable access to US-based services had pushed continental providers back into the spotlight. Reports that Ukraine is weighing Eutelsat's OneWeb system alongside an Amazon network as an alternative fueled the speculation — though no new contract or order with Kyiv has been announced.

Enthusiasm Outruns the Hardware

Reuters, citing industry sources, poured some cold water on the narrative: OneWeb cannot serve as an immediate substitute for established rival networks, held back by constraints in ground infrastructure and end-user terminals. That gap between strategic interest and booked revenue is where the rally gets shaky. Investors have a habit of mistaking geopolitical relevance for near-term cash flow, and a durable re-rating needs confirmed income rather than political hope.

There is also a competitive angle worth watching. Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises, said Wednesday that Eutelsat OneWeb is well ahead of rivals including Starlink in India's satellite licensing process, thanks to an application filed five years earlier. Final regulatory approvals for market entry are still pending.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

Fleet Build-Out and the Broadcast Backbone

Away from the headlines, operational progress is arriving in smaller increments. Roughly two weeks ago, Airbus Defence and Space completed construction of the first 32 new OneWeb satellites, which are being prepared for launch with SpaceX. Expanding the LEO constellation is necessary for competitiveness, but it consumes substantial capital and demands patience before meaningful returns materialize.

The traditional broadcast business, meanwhile, remains a dependable earnings pillar. On October 7, Eutelsat announced the renewal of its strategic cooperation with Algeria's national broadcaster Télédiffusion d'Algérie for TV channel distribution via EUTELSAT 7 West A. On October 14 came the extension of its agreement with Antik Telecom and A1 for Antik Sat in Slovakia at the 16° East position — a multi-transponder deal covering satellite capacity for television services in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. These renewals keep the existing fleet utilized, though extending current contracts hardly amounts to dynamic growth.

October 29 Is the Real Verdict

The fundamental test is now close at hand. Eutelsat has scheduled publication of first-quarter 2026–27 revenue figures for October 29, 2026. That report will show whether the OneWeb segment is generating the hoped-for momentum alongside its heavy investment costs, and how much of the demand for alternative satellite capacity is already flowing into operating revenue.

Until confirmed new orders land on the table, the recent advance stands on uncertain ground. The prudent stance is to wait for the revenue base to prove it can keep pace with the expectations the market has built.
