Evotec's CFO Offers a Lifeline, but the Numbers Still Have to Catch Up

A single sentence from the finance chief was enough to give Evotec's beaten-down stock a moment of relief on Friday. Claire Hinshelwood told the market that the company's operating indicators are pointing in the right direction again — a signal that briefly lifted the SDAX-listed share to EUR 3.098 before it gave back most of the advance and closed at EUR 2.90. The modest bounce does little to repair the broader picture: the stock is still down 47% since the start of the year, and only days earlier, on Tuesday, it had touched a fresh 52-week low of EUR 2.77.
That the market greeted Hinshelwood's remarks with anything other than a shrug is itself telling. After months of relentless declines, investors are starved for evidence that the worst is behind the drug developer. Yet the skepticism runs deep, and management's optimism will only carry weight once it shows up in the quarterly figures. Without a verifiable stabilization of operating earnings, rallies of this kind tend to fade quickly.
A Guidance Cut That Set the Tone
The selloff that preceded Friday's reprieve was not driven by sentiment alone. On July 14, Evotec slashed its full-year 2026 targets, guiding for revenue of just EUR 570 million to EUR 610 million and a adjusted EBITDA loss of as much as EUR 105 million. The first-half numbers drove the point home: sales came in at EUR 300.1 million, a decline of nearly one-fifth year over year, while adjusted EBITDA stood at minus EUR 42.7 million. The lowered outlook was reaffirmed roughly three weeks ago.
Against that backdrop, the company is pushing ahead with its restructuring. The Horizon transformation program is proceeding according to plan, according to Evotec, as management works to reshape the cost base. The supervisory board has seen changes of its own — Camilla Macapili Languille stepped down from her mandate on August 7.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?
Pipeline Progress Runs Parallel to the Overhaul
While the cost-cutting unfolds, Evotec is working to generate fresh momentum in the lab. On September 9, its Just – Evotec Biologics unit moved the antibody candidate JST-018 into a Phase I clinical trial. The therapy is a monoclonal antibody cocktail targeting orthopoxviruses, developed under the Accelerated Antibodies Program for the U.S. Department of War.
The company has also been widening its partner network. Roughly three weeks ago it struck a research collaboration with Plectonic Biotech to explore T-cell-engaging approaches in solid tumors, following an earlier partnership with Odyssey Therapeutics announced on August 6. Scientific alliances and platform combinations — such as pairing Evotec's BiTco technology with external approaches — burnish the strategic profile. What shareholders care about, though, is whether that scientific substance eventually translates into durable earnings. After the setbacks of recent years, the capital markets want tangible proof of commercial value.
A Changing Share Base
On the corporate level, further housekeeping has taken place. Evotec reported a new total of 177,909,968 voting rights following a conditional capital increase and the issuance of subscription shares, disclosed on September 15. These legal and personnel adjustments underscore the ongoing reorganization. After a turbulent year, the leadership is trying to shore up internal structures — though that alone will not be enough to calm the stock.
November Looms as the Real Test
The urgency of a turnaround is hard to overstate. Management has flagged significant operating losses for the full year, and the decisive moment for the cautiously upbeat signals from the executive suite arrives in the fall: on November 5, 2026, Evotec will publish its financial results for the third quarter of 2026. Only then will it become clear whether the operating indicators are genuinely marking a turning point — or whether Friday's optimism was just another brief flicker in a long, dark year.
