F5 Networks gave investors plenty to cheer in its latest results. What followed was a lesson in how quickly the market can look past a strong quarter. Shares fell 21% to EUR 327.00 after the company paired better-than-expected fourth-quarter figures with a margin outlook that points to rising costs in the year ahead.

The stock reaction had nothing to do with any mechanical adjustment — it reflected a straightforward reassessment of profitability. F5 beat expectations on both revenue and adjusted earnings for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, yet the forward guidance shifted the conversation from growth to the cost of achieving it.

A margin warning takes center stage

For fiscal 2027, F5 projects an adjusted gross margin of 80.5–82.5%, down from 84% in the most recent quarter. Two forces are squeezing that number: heavier spending on the company's AI security push and more expensive memory components.

The sales build-out is substantial. F5 plans to double its team of specialized AI security sellers in fiscal 2027, according to GeekWire, and to more than double marketing spending for the segment. Those outlays land before any meaningful revenue contribution, which explains why the profitability question has overtaken the quarterly beat in investors' minds.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying F5 Networks?

Revenue guidance for fiscal 2027 calls for growth of 8–9%. Reuters reported that investors had been looking for more than 10%. Adjusted earnings per share are forecast at USD 18–18.30.

The quarter itself was strong

None of this points to a broad business downturn. Revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 climbed 13% to USD 917 million, with product revenue up 23%. The product segment has now posted double-digit growth for nine consecutive quarters.

Profitability, though, was already thinning. The adjusted operating margin came in at 33.7%, compared with 37.0% a year earlier, and adjusted earnings per share were USD 4.42. Cost pressure, in other words, is not solely a story about the coming fiscal year.

AI bookings surge, but the payoff is deferred

Demand for F5's AI offerings is real. Direct AI bookings exceeded USD 100 million in fiscal 2026, a jump of nearly 300%, while the number of AI customers more than quadrupled to over two hundred.

That momentum sits at the heart of the debate on Wall Street. Evercore ISI reaffirmed its Outperform rating and lifted its price target to USD 500 from 475, citing the AI business and stronger software development. Piper Sandler moved the other way, downgrading the stock to Neutral from Overweight. Analyst James Fish kept a USD 461 target, arguing the valuation looks stretched and that the iSeries refresh cycle is nearing its end — with growth potentially peaking and no major new catalyst in sight.

F5 Networks at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

That view echoes management's own commentary. CFO Cooper Werner expects the hardware renewal cycle to lose steam in the second half of fiscal 2027. Refreshes have accounted for roughly two-thirds of systems business in recent years, with new business making up about one-third — a mix that makes an expiring replacement cycle very different from durable demand from new customers.

Buybacks offer little cover

Directors approved an additional USD 1.5 billion in share repurchases, bringing total available authorization to roughly USD 1.8 billion, including USD 322 million remaining under the existing program. The move did nothing to stem the selling.

What matters now is not whether F5 keeps growing — management expects it will, with another year of double-digit product revenue growth projected. The question is the quality of that growth. The AI build-out opens fresh opportunities but demands heavier spending up front, just as margin strength fades and the hardware refresh tailwind winds down.
