Father and Son Sentenced Over Unsafe Gas Work That Put Stoke-on-Trent Residents at Risk

A father and son have been sentenced after carrying out illegal gas work that left residents of a Stoke-on-Trent property — including a baby — exposed to the risk of a gas leak.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted 55-year-old Wayne Culliss and 21-year-old Kazys Culliss following an investigation into the substandard installations. The case serves as a reminder to UK employers and tradespeople that gas work must only be carried out by registered and qualified professionals.
Court Penalties
The court handed down separate sentences to the two men. Wayne Culliss was fined ÂŁ3,000 and ordered to pay ÂŁ2,500 in prosecution costs.
Kazys Culliss received a 12-month community order, which requires him to complete 140 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay ÂŁ500 in costs.
Danger to the Public
The HSE said the poor standard of work created a leak that placed the property's occupants in direct danger. Unauthorised gas installations can have life-threatening consequences, which is why all gas work in the UK must be carried out by engineers on the Gas Safe Register.
The prosecution highlights the ongoing regulatory focus on gas safety in residential settings.
