Filtronic Slips 10% as Investor Exits and Valuation Concerns Overshadow Record Order Book

Shares in the British radio-frequency specialist slide to €2.60 after a turbulent stretch for its shareholder register and a sobering look at recent financials.
London markets reopened after the Summer Bank Holiday on Tuesday to a sharp sell-off in Filtronic, with the high-frequency technology group shedding a tenth of its value to trade at €2.60. The move extends a difficult month for the stock, which had already been under pressure over the preceding 30 trading days.
At the current price, the company carries a market capitalisation of €947.78 million — a figure that some market participants argue has run ahead of the underlying operational picture.
Institutional Reconfigurations Fuel Unease
A flurry of regulatory disclosures has kept investors on edge regarding the ownership structure. Morgan Stanley, which crossed the 5 percent notification threshold on 19 August with roughly 6.60 percent of voting rights, slipped back below that mark just a day later. By 26 August, filings revealed the bank's directly held voting stake had fallen to zero, with a residual position of around 4.66 percent now sitting under a trading book exemption.
The rapid repositioning by a heavyweight institution has done little to calm nerves. Adding to the sentiment, Kelso Group Holdings confirmed yesterday that it had fully exited its position, selling its entire holding of 500,000 shares over the course of the year. The investment firm banked a handsome return in the process — buying in at an average of 185 pence and selling at roughly 406 pence, a gain of approximately 119 percent.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Filtronic?
Complete exits by institutional investors often raise questions about whether a valuation ceiling has been reached, and Tuesday's price action suggests such concerns are resonating with other shareholders.
A Year of Mixed Signals
The market's caution stands in contrast to the longer-term growth narrative laid out in the company's audited annual report, published on 17 August for the fiscal year ended 31 May 2026. Revenue came in at £55.5 million, a modest dip from the prior year's £56.3 million but still more than triple the £17.1 million recorded in fiscal 2022.
The profitability picture was less flattering. Adjusted EBITDA fell to £11.3 million from £17.0 million a year earlier, with margins compressed to around 20 percent, according to media reports. Management had already flagged in early August that revenue would trail some market expectations, citing headwinds linked to customer SpaceX and unfavourable currency movements. The customer concentration that has defined much of Filtronic's recent growth story did ease somewhat during the period, though it remains a focal point for analysts.
Order Book Points to Recovery
Looking ahead, the company is banking on a turnaround in fiscal 2027, and the pipeline offers reasons for optimism. A major order from SpaceX valued at $62.5 million for E-band gallium nitride (GaN) technology, alongside a £13.4 million contract with a European defence firm, underpin the planning assumptions. Management states that the current order backlog already covers roughly 90 percent of expected revenue for the coming fiscal year.
The strategic progress has not, however, convinced everyone on valuation grounds. Analyst Dhierin Bechai downgraded the stock to "Sell" on 17 August, acknowledging the operational achievements and new customer wins but arguing that the share price already reflects these improvements more than adequately.
What to Watch
The coming months will hinge on the successful ramp-up of GaN E-band production and whether defence-related revenue can double as planned. Market observers also point to lingering risks around potential dilution and the pace of execution on major projects.
Shareholders will have the chance to press management on these matters at the annual general meeting, scheduled for 30 October in Sedgefield. The invitation and annual report were dispatched together on 17 August, giving investors ample time to digest the numbers before the gathering.
For now, the market appears to be taking a more measured view of Filtronic's transformation story, weighing the promise of its satellite communications focus against the realities of margin pressure and a shifting institutional base.
