Fluence Energy has rattled investors with a sweeping downgrade of its fiscal 2026 outlook, the second such revision in a matter of weeks, as chronic manufacturing delays at its Houston contract facility ripple through the company's revenue and cost structure.

The energy storage specialist now expects revenue of roughly USD 2.4 billion for the year ending September 30, 2026 — a steep cut from the previously guided range of USD 2.9 billion to USD 3.1 billion. Consensus estimates had stood at about USD 2.98 billion. The adjusted EBITDA picture is even grimmer: management projects a loss of approximately USD 200 million, a dramatic widening from the USD 10 million shortfall it had forecast just weeks earlier.

Production Woes at the Heart of the Shortfall

The Houston plant's troubled ramp-up is the single largest driver behind the revision, accounting for roughly 80 percent of the total revenue reduction. CEO Julian Nebreda acknowledged that the facility's output has lagged far behind plan. In August, the site was producing fewer than one unit per day against a target of eleven. That rate has since climbed to three units daily, but the gap to original projections remains vast.

The company quantified the damage: USD 450 million tied to delivery delays, about USD 65 million in contractual penalties, and roughly USD 85 million in elevated logistics costs. According to media reports, project shipments worth approximately USD 400 million — originally slated for August — have been pushed into fiscal 2027.

Management Shake-Up Aims to Steady Operations

Alongside the guidance cut, Fluence announced a significant leadership overhaul aimed at tackling the operational bottlenecks. Bernerd Da Santos has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, joining from AES to take charge of supply chain, manufacturing, and product development. His base salary was set at USD 650,000, supplemented by substantial bonus arrangements. Further changes were made across management and the board.

Nebreda said the appointment is designed to resolve the supply chain and production challenges swiftly. Despite the restructuring, the company maintained that it will not require additional capital for fiscal 2027, reiterating its goal of achieving neutral to positive operating cash flow by the end of September 2027.

Analysts Cut Targets Sharply

The Street's response was swift and severe. Baird's Ben Kallo downgraded the stock to "Underperform" and slashed his price target from USD 10 to just USD 3, citing mounting pessimism after repeated misses. Canaccord kept its buy rating but trimmed its target from USD 24 to USD 15.

Adding to the sector's headwinds, Chinese manufacturers control nearly 40 percent of the global battery storage market, complicating procurement strategies for Western players like Fluence.

A Lone Bright Spot Abroad

The one piece of encouraging news came from Eastern Europe, where the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) approved loans for a project by Ukrainian energy company DTEK. Fluence is set to supply battery storage equipment with a capacity of 200 MW, enough to serve roughly 600,000 households. The international contract, however, did little to offset concerns over U.S. production capacity on the day.

Shares of Fluence Energy were trading at EUR 6.70 pre-market, down 14 percent, extending a year-to-date slide and widening the gap to their 52-week high. Whether the new management team can stabilize Houston's output and profitably work through a hefty order backlog will be the critical question in the months ahead.
