Germany Overhauls Training Rules for 19 Construction Trades as Safety Standards Evolve

The construction sector is entering a new era as of Saturday, with updated training regulations taking effect across 19 trades. The changes arrive alongside fresh guidance on standard-issue workwear for safety-critical industries, including logistics and skilled crafts.

Exams Restructured Across Most Three-Year Apprenticeships

Sixteen of the affected three-year training programmes are abandoning the traditional mid-point examination. In its place, apprentices will now sit a two-part assessment, with the first segment scheduled for the fourth half-year of training and the second at the conclusion of their apprenticeship. The requirement for at least 30 weeks of cross-company training remains firmly in place.

The revised curricula place renewed emphasis on climate protection, renovation of existing buildings and sustainability — a direct response to shifting demands in modern construction practice.

Workplace Safety Rules Relaxed for Smaller Employers

Legal frameworks governing occupational safety have been evolving over recent months. Since June, the updated DGUV Regulation 2 has applied to member companies of the BGW, the professional association for health services and welfare. The threshold for simplified regular supervision has been doubled, rising from 10 to 20 employees.

Digital supervision via telephone or video conference is now permitted under specific conditions. The pathway into the safety professional role has also widened — beyond engineers, the field now welcomes psychologists, biologists, occupational hygienists and ergonomics specialists, all of whom must submit annual reports and evidence of continued professional development.

Lighter Materials Promise Better Arc Protection

Innovations in protective textiles are targeting the perennial trade-off between safety and comfort. Gore-Tex Labs' Pyrad technology delivers single-layer protection against electric arcs at Class 2 level. Weighing in at 320 g/m², the material reportedly improves both freedom of movement and heat dissipation — field tests involving more than 100 employees of an energy supplier under high-temperature conditions supported these claims. Manufacturers including Van Heurck, Iturri and BSD are already equipping workers with the material.

For cotton workwear requiring chemical resistance, NINGBO INNO PHARMCHEM has introduced tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC). The compound bonds chemically to cellulose fibres, creating permanent flame-retardant properties that survive repeated washing. Application methods include padding and ammonia gassing.

Logistics Data Streams and Storage Safety Updated

Information flows in the supply chain have also seen refinement. GS1 Germany revised its application recommendation for logistics processes — covering transport, warehousing and co-packing — effective 31 July, with the aim of reducing media discontinuities through more efficient EDI messaging.

Workplace and warehouse safety continues to be shaped by specific requirements around fall protection and storage practices. The DGUV Information 201-056, updated in late 2025, addresses the full lifecycle of safety systems and references the European standard DIN EN 17235 for safety roof hooks and cable-based fall arrest systems. A symposium for planners is scheduled for late August to discuss these provisions.

Since the end of last year, clarified rules have also governed the joint storage of lithium-ion batteries and oxygen self-rescuers, mandating measures such as separate storage areas and specific spacing requirements.
