Germany Switches On First Fully Automated Truck Weighing Station Near Düren

Trucks rolling along the A4 motorway near Düren now pass through a control point that never asks them to slow down — and yet knows exactly how heavy they are.
The Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and Autobahn GmbH officially activated Germany's first fully automated digital weight inspection system on 31 July 2026. The installation sits on the A4, a corridor that funnels freight from the North Sea ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam toward Eastern Europe. Its proximity to the Köln-Eifeltor container terminal also guarantees a steady stream of heavy goods traffic.
Sensors in the asphalt do the weighing
Embedded sensors in the road surface measure both individual axle loads and total vehicle weight while trucks travel at normal speed. The "Weigh-in-Motion" technology eliminates the need for vehicles to brake or stop for an initial reading — a departure from conventional inspection methods that typically require dedicated pull-in areas.
If the system detects a potential overload, LED displays at the roadside flash the offending truck's licence plate along with a binding instruction to exit the motorway. The vehicle is then directed onto a separate weighing lane, where a legally admissible follow-up weighing takes place. That second measurement provides the evidentiary basis for any penalties.
Fines, points and a driving ban
Enforcement is immediate and strict. Any overload of at least 5 percent triggers administrative proceedings. Fines start at €80 for the driver and €140 for the vehicle owner, according to the project partners. A point is also added to the driver's record in the national driving aptitude register.
The truck cannot continue its journey until the excess weight is removed by unloading or redistributing cargo. Until then, a driving ban applies.

Pilot project points to nationwide expansion
The Düren site is the first of 16 planned digital weighing installations across Germany. BALM and Autobahn GmbH intend the system to serve as a blueprint for the rest of the federal motorway network.
Officials argue that automated pre-selection makes enforcement far more efficient: only vehicles with a concrete suspicion of overloading are stopped, sparing compliant operators unnecessary delays. The broader goal is twofold — improving road safety and protecting road surfaces from premature wear caused by overweight vehicles.
