A Greek university has opened the fifth intake of its online safety management master's, pairing 90 ECTS of coursework with AR/VR drills set in simulated chemical plants.

Democritus University of Thrace launched the new academic cycle of its Master of Science in Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety Management in the Chemical Industry (MSc QSSHE) on 23 October 2026. The start coincided with the opening of the European Week for Safety and Health at Work.

The programme is aimed at specialists and managers responsible for occupational protection and management systems in heavily regulated production environments. Teaching runs in synchronous distance format so that working professionals can take part without stepping away from their jobs.

Three semesters, twelve courses, one thesis

Spanning three semesters, the degree carries a total of 90 ECTS points, divided across twelve courses and a final master's thesis.

A fixed element of the training is "Kavala Week," during which participants complete hands-on exercises in the "Ifestos" laboratory and in a virtual crisis control room. The university has also added training modules using augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) to simulate safety-critical operations in industrial chemical facilities as realistically as possible.

Formal qualifications raise the bar for safety managers — but the day-to-day groundwork still starts with solid documentation. A free COSHH toolkit offers 43 ready-to-use templates, checklists and toolbox talks to help you meet your legal duty to assess hazardous substances. Get the free COSHH Risk Assessment Toolkit

Ninety-one students and 47 graduates so far

Across its first four cohorts, the programme has enrolled 91 students and produced 47 graduates. Roughly 75 percent of graduates are employed after completing the degree.

In 2026 the course received a "Fully Compliant" rating from the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (E?AAE), Greece's quality assurance and accreditation agency. It also holds certifications under the ISO 21001 and ISO 29994 standards. Back in 2024, the offering took first prize in the education category at the Health & Safety Awards.

A wider European push to formalise crisis skills

Thrace's initiative sits alongside similar efforts by European universities and institutions to anchor safety and risk expertise at academic level.

In Switzerland, the Federal Office for Civil Protection (BABS) and the international Institute of Management in Technology (iimt) at the University of Fribourg created a new continuing education programme, "Leading in Crisis Situations" (Certificate of Advanced Studies, CAS), on 28 October 2026. Under the academic direction of Diana Ingenhoff and with development support from Stephan Nüesch, the bilingual course (German and French) teaches staff leadership under pressure, structured decision-making, sustainable communication and stress management to cadres from rescue and protection organisations and to operators of critical infrastructure.

Italy's "G. D'Annunzio" University of Chieti-Pescara, meanwhile, relaunched its one-year part-time master's in "Health & Chemical Safety Manager" (60 CFU, 1,500 hours) on 28 October 2026 for the 2026/2027 academic year, in cooperation with the industry association Federchimica. Applications are open until 20 November 2026. The University of Pisa is planning a 5 March 2027 start for its "GIRSSAL" master's programme under the leadership of Beatrice Casini, which combines 425 internship hours and laboratory phases with a focus on holistic management of environmental and workplace risks.

Regulators are tightening qualification requirements at management level too. At the it-sa trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) presented a sample curriculum for training executive management, drawn up together with associations from the Alliance for Cyber Security. The curriculum responds to obligations under Paragraph 38 of the BSI Act within the framework of the European NIS-2 requirements. BSI representative Dr. Judith Nink stressed that security management is a strategic leadership task at board level.
