Heidelberg Materials is detecting the first faint stirrings of a construction upturn, even as one of its flagship decarbonisation ventures stalls on economic grounds. The two developments pull in opposite directions, and investors now have until 4 November 2026 — the scheduled date for the group's third-quarter report — to see which force leaves the deeper mark on the order book.

CEO Dominik von Achten told Reuters on Friday that tentative recovery signals had surfaced in the July-to-September window. Spending tied to Germany's more than EUR 500 billion infrastructure programme is beginning to gather momentum, he said, pointing to infrastructure, energy and data centres as the areas where the money is starting to move. His language described an emerging impulse rather than a broad-based boom.

That distinction matters. Early demand signals are encouraging for the building materials group, but they say nothing yet about the strength of any rebound or what it will contribute to earnings. Von Achten also flagged a pipeline of projects that are largely ready to break ground, alongside talks with major technology companies about lower-carbon construction materials. Those conversations open potential commercial doors; they are not signed orders.

A Concrete Foothold at Sizewell C

On the ground, Heidelberg Materials UK installed the first on-site concrete plant at the Sizewell C nuclear power station project on 19 October, producing specialist concrete for the construction work, according to trade publication New Civil Engineer. The installation demonstrates involvement in a major build — though on its own it does not prove a general turn in demand.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberg Materials?

The investment picture is less encouraging. Heidelberg Materials said on Thursday that it is pausing the GeZero carbon capture project at its Geseke site in its current form, with the company intending to refine the scheme's design. According to the company, viable framework conditions are missing: solutions for transporting and storing CO? would need to be available in time and economically defensible. The obstacle therefore lies not only in capturing carbon at the plant but in what happens to it afterwards.

Operations at the Geseke facility are not directly affected, and the pause is not an abandonment — Heidelberg Materials is setting aside the present blueprint while it reworks the concept. Even so, the move shows that brighter demand prospects do not by themselves clear investment hurdles.

Analysts Pull in Different Directions

Recent broker actions offer no unified verdict. On Field Investment Research cut its price target on Thursday to EUR 180 from EUR 235 while keeping a "Neutral" rating — a lower marker paired with an unchanged stance. Goodbody upgraded the stock from "Sell" to "Hold" the same day with a EUR 140 target, an improvement that stops well short of a buy recommendation. Deutsche Bank Research, according to media reports, trimmed its target on 20 October to EUR 206 from EUR 210 while retaining its buy rating.

Heidelberg Materials at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A raised rating and a reduced target are different signals and cannot be blended into a single bullish analyst view. What emerges instead is a mixed picture: cautious hopes for demand set against concrete investment obstacles.

The 4 November update will be the next hard test, showing whether the impulses von Achten described are visible in actual operations. Until then, the key is to keep the tentative demand assessment separate from the clearly limited scope of the GeZero pause — and to judge the infrastructure package by what it delivers in the business, not by the headline figure.
