The iShares MSCI Global Semiconductors UCITS ETF USD Acc (ISIN IE000I8KRLL9) shed 3.3% yesterday, closing at EUR 17.67, as a hotter-than-expected US inflation reading rippled through global equity markets and hit rate-sensitive technology names hardest.

September's US consumer price index climbed to 3.7% year-on-year, according to Reuters and Bloomberg, up from 3.4% in August and ahead of the 3.6% economists had penciled in. The surprise fueled bets on additional Federal Reserve tightening and pushed bond yields higher — a combination that raises the cost of financing for richly valued tech and AI-related companies, semiconductors included.

Supply Chain Feels the Squeeze From Philadelphia to Seoul

The damage was visible across the entire chip complex. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 3.1% on Wednesday, according to Reuters, notching its sixth straight losing session. Asian markets fared worse: Samsung Electronics tumbled 9.7%, SK Hynix 11.1% and Tokyo Electron 7.5%, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing slipped 1.8% ahead of its quarterly results.

Those losses feed directly into the broadly diversified ETF, which tracks the world's largest chipmakers and therefore offers little shelter when the whole sector sells off.

AI Spending Scrutiny Adds Fuel to the Fire

Rate anxiety alone doesn't explain the breadth of the retreat. A parallel debate over whether the billions being poured into AI infrastructure will ever pay off has unsettled investors. Broadcom chief Hock Tan likened certain investment flows into the sector to "casino gambling," remarks reported by Axios and Reuters that landed on already jittery markets.

Compounding the unease, Reuters reported that China's ChangXin Memory Technologies — also referred to as CXMT — has made progress on a new memory chip architecture, stoking fears of intensifying Chinese competition and weighing particularly on US memory-linked names.

Long-Term Momentum Intact, Short-Term Pressure Mounting

Despite the recent slide, the fund's longer-term performance remains striking. It is up 85% since the start of the year and 99% over twelve months. At EUR 17.67, the price sits comfortably above its 200-day moving average of EUR 15.26, though it remains 18% below its 52-week high set on June 22.

The near-term picture is less flattering. The ETF lost 6.2% over the past week, underscoring how quickly sentiment has deteriorated. Its RSI of 41.6 has yet to signal oversold conditions, but an annualized 30-day volatility of 34% lays bare the sector's heightened nervousness.

ASML Delivers Solid Numbers as BlackRock Stays Quiet

Amid the turbulence, ASML Holding reported third-quarter 2026 results on Wednesday: net revenue of EUR 11.7 billion and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion. The company also stated that planned delivery capacity for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand — a signal of persistent appetite for lithography systems even as share prices wobble.

BlackRock, for its part, issued a routine net asset value notice for the ETF with a trading date of October 13. The filing contained no indication of unusual inflows or outflows. Nor have there been any fund-specific developments on methodology, costs or index composition over the past two weeks — meaning the price action reflects nothing more than the broader industry backdrop rather than anything intrinsic to the fund.

Investors now turn their attention to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's upcoming quarterly report, widely seen as the next major sentiment test for the entire sector.
