IBM closed out a busy stretch of announcements with a slightly softer share price, slipping 0.1% on Friday to finish at €220.00, even as the company raised its full-year cash generation ambitions and formally opened its first quantum computer in Illinois.

The financial backdrop came from third-quarter 2026 results published on 21 October. IBM reported revenue of $17.1 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $2.95. Management left its outlook for full-year currency-adjusted revenue growth unchanged at 4%–5%, but lifted its guidance for free cash flow growth: the metric is now expected to rise by more than $1 billion compared with the prior year.

On the quantum front, IBM unveiled its Quantum System Two in Chicago on Friday alongside the University of Chicago, the state of Illinois and the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park. The machine, described by the company as its most powerful system available and its first quantum computer in Illinois, is operational at Hyde Park Labs and runs on IBM's Quantum Nighthawk processor, which carries 120 qubits.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

A day earlier, IBM teamed up with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and AMD to launch a joint development platform aimed at quantum error correction. The initiative knits quantum machines together with high-performance computing rather than treating the two as separate tracks. In its first phase, IBM quantum computers will be linked with Umbra, the research center's high-performance computing system, which relies on AMD processors and graphics chips. The effort supports the US Department of Energy's Quantum Genesis Mission.

IBM also used the week to roll out identity and control features for AI agents, announced on 27 October. The package includes agent detection, verified identities and access controls, plus tools for assessing how well agents perform inside enterprise systems. Agent Identity and an integration with HashiCorp Vault are part of the rollout.

Elsewhere in its software stack, Confluent — an IBM company — announced new capabilities for its Streamhouse architecture, designed to keep business context current for AI agents, applications and analytics.

On the partnerships side, IBM and the United States Tennis Association confirmed on 28 October a five-year extension of their tie-up, keeping IBM as the official AI and cloud partner of the US Open through 2031.
