IBM's Nighthawk Chip Powers First Illinois Quantum System as Evercore Stays Bullish
Published on 11/08/2026 at 18:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deIBM has planted its quantum flag in Chicago. The company unveiled its first quantum computer in the state of Illinois on Friday — an IBM Quantum System Two housed in the Hyde Park Labs and driven by the Nighthawk processor. The University of Chicago is hosting the machine, according to company statements.
That system won't stay put forever. IBM plans to relocate it to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park once that site is completed, meaning the announced move applies to a computer that is already up and running.
A 120-Qubit Chip at the Center of Two Efforts
The Nighthawk processor, which carries 120 qubits, sits at the heart of more than just the Chicago installation. Roughly two weeks ago, IBM, AMD and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory launched a joint development platform aimed squarely at quantum error correction. The setup links IBM's quantum machines to Umbra, the research lab's high-performance computing system, which runs on AMD processors. IBM's quantum hardware and the lab's classical computing infrastructure are both part of the effort, and the Nighthawk chip ranks among the integrated IBM systems.
The partners are chasing a scientifically relevant quantum computer by 2028. IBM's broader quantum work, meanwhile, spans both operational hardware and error correction in tandem with high-performance computers — the initiatives unveiled about two weeks ago included the 120-qubit machine and the shared platform with AMD and Oak Ridge.

Confluent Keeps Business Context Current
Not every recent IBM announcement revolves around qubits. Confluent, an IBM company, rolled out new Streamhouse capabilities roughly two weeks ago as part of an architecture designed to keep business context up to date for AI agents, applications and analytics. The offering is explicitly not limited to AI agents — applications and analytics fall within its stated scope as well. Here the focus shifts from quantum hardware to the freshness of business context.
Evercore Reiterates Outperform, $275 Target
On the analyst front, Evercore ISI reportedly reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating and $275.00 price target on Friday. Shares slipped 0.1% in Friday trading.
Income investors have a date to circle. IBM declared a quarterly dividend of $1.69 per common share on October 21, payable December 10, 2026, to shareholders of record as of November 10, 2026.
IBM at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Beyond its own balance sheet, IBM extended an existing partnership: on October 28 it renewed its agreement with the United States Tennis Association for the US Open, keeping IBM on as the tournament's official AI and cloud partner through 2031.
