The most significant UK fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, at the Star Trading Estate in Caerleon, Newport. Gwent emergency services received the first report at approximately 02:42 BST, mobilising 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform to tackle the blaze.
The site was evacuated and all personnel were accounted for, but intense smoke plumes prompted Public Health Wales to advise local residents to keep windows and doors closed. The fire also disrupted the local water supply, with Welsh Water working to restore service by Saturday afternoon.

The HSE has formally opened an investigation into a major explosion and fire on July 24 at Highlands Farm in Rettendon, Essex. The blast, caused by fertiliser stored in an industrial unit, led Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to declare a major incident.
More than 100 firefighters were needed to bring the situation under control, with 20 sustaining injuries during the operation.
