Infineon Bets EUR 1.1 Billion on Austria's GaN Crown Jewel as Enphase and NVIDIA Deals Take Shape
Published on 10/30/2026 at 02:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon Technologies will sink roughly EUR 1.1 billion into its Villach site through 2034, funding what the German chipmaker bills as the world's first high-volume production of gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. The investment, unveiled Tuesday, will be housed in existing cleanroom space at the Austrian plant rather than in new construction.
Output is slated to begin by the end of 2027, with the company leaning on a modernization of its current fabrication lines to get there. The shares responded positively to the news, gaining 2.3% on the day.
Enphase Switch Targets AI Data Centers
One of the first applications for the GaN platform comes from Infineon's collaboration with Enphase Energy, announced Monday. The two firms have jointly developed 900-volt GaN switches that Enphase intends to slot into the power modules of its IQ solid-state transformers for AI data centers.
According to Infineon, the bidirectional devices have been tested successfully and are being integrated into development setups, with production qualification still to come. Enphase likewise confirmed the parts remain at the development-build stage — meaning the announcement covers a planned deployment, not volume manufacturing already under way.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
NVIDIA Tie-Up Eyes 800-Volt Architecture
Infineon's work with NVIDIA, disclosed on October 21, runs along a separate track. The pair are co-developing GaN-based intermediate-circuit converters for 800-volt DC architectures in AI data centers, with the emphasis on high-voltage power conversion. Where the Enphase project centers on the switches themselves, the NVIDIA effort is aimed at the converter systems that move power around the rack.
Beyond the Data Center
The GaN push is not the only item on Infineon's Tuesday agenda. The company rolled out new OptiMOS-7 automotive MOSFETs and, together with CARIAD and Volkswagen Group (China) Technology, is setting up an Innovation Application Center in Hefei.
On the real estate side, Infineon opened a new office and laboratory building at its Warstein innovation hub a day earlier. Around 350 employees are expected to move in, with roughly 1,200 square meters of lab space on offer. GARBE Institutional Capital and BC Partners Real Estate put the investment in the mid-double-digit millions of euros.
Backing Europe's Physical AI Start-ups
Infineon is also throwing its weight behind early-stage ventures. The company has joined the "Physical AI Growth Lab," a program launched on October 22 by the UnternehmerTUM Accelerator alongside Microsoft and NVIDIA. It targets founders working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI.
Infineon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The offering for European start-ups comes free of charge and takes no equity stake. It runs from January through April 2027.
Investors looking for the next hard numbers will have to wait: Infineon's next scheduled results release is set for November 10, 2026, when it will report fourth-quarter 2026 figures.
