Infineon Opens Warstein Lab as Intel's Weak Guidance Drags Chip Stocks Lower
Published on 11/01/2026 at 08:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon cut the ribbon on a new office and laboratory building at its Warstein innovation site on Wednesday, a facility earmarked for developing advanced power semiconductor modules. The opening lands in a busy stretch for the Munich-based chipmaker, which has spent the past week pairing manufacturing expansion with fresh AI and automotive partnerships — even as its share price took a hit from a sector-wide rout.
The stock fell 4.5% on Friday, caught in a global selloff across semiconductor equities. Reuters attributed the downdraft to Intel's fourth-quarter guidance and persistent weakness in the PC market, with media reports adding that jitters over heavy AI spending by large US technology groups piled on the pressure. The decline swept through technology names in the US and Asia as well as European chipmakers, Infineon explicitly among them.
Intel's outlook did the heaviest damage. The US group guided for fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of USD 15 billion to USD 16 billion, well short of the USD 17.1 billion analysts had been expecting, according to media reports. Worries about AI capital expenditure at major cloud providers, following Amazon's results, added a second layer of gloom.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
GaN Push Anchored in Villach
Against that unsettled sector backdrop, Infineon's own investment plans have pressed ahead. The company has earmarked roughly EUR 1.1 billion through 2034 for its Villach site in Austria, where it intends to build the world's first high-volume production line for GaN power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. Output is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027. The project is backed by EUR 319 million in funding under the European Chips Act.
On the AI infrastructure side, Infineon disclosed on October 21 a deepened collaboration with NVIDIA covering GaN-based power conversion systems for 800-volt DC architectures in AI data centers. The automotive arm was not left out: on Tuesday the company launched its LinearFET MOSFET technology, aimed at power distribution in electric vehicles and software-defined cars.
A Lab for Europe's Robotics Startups
Infineon also teamed up with UnternehmerTUM Accelerator, Microsoft and NVIDIA on October 22 to launch the Physical AI Growth Lab. The free program targets European startups working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI, takes no equity stake in participating companies, and is set to run from January through April 2027.
Investors will get their next hard read on the business on November 10, when Infineon plans to publish results for the fourth quarter and the 2026 fiscal year. The date is flagged as provisional in the company's calendar.
