Infineon's Robot and AI Power Push Proceeds While Chip Stocks Wobble on Spending Fears

Infineon Technologies is pressing ahead on robotics, gallium nitride power conversion and silicon carbide supply, even as its shares absorb the spillover from a technology-sector pullback driven by doubts over whether the industry's massive AI spending will pay off.

The German chipmaker has now been caught in two separate waves of sector weakness. In the earlier episode it closed with a daily move of -6.5%, and in the more recent session it was down 2.7% as the broader European technology index shed 2.1%, according to Reuters. STMicroelectronics and ASML came under pressure alongside Infineon, while Aixtron featured among the German names hit in the first selloff. Reuters attributed both moves to the sector backdrop rather than to any fresh company-specific disclosure — a distinction that matters for anyone trying to read the share price as a verdict on Infineon's own announcements.

Why the AI Trade Is Being Repriced

The trigger this time is investor anxiety about the sustainability and profitability of heavy AI investment. That worry is not the same thing as a deterioration in Infineon's business, though it can weigh on the valuations attached to the AI infrastructure build-out the company is tied to. Reuters also pointed to higher oil prices and French bond yields as additional drags. No new negative corporate news from Infineon was reported in connection with the decline.

The company's own news flow, by contrast, has been about concrete technical work. Infineon deepened its collaboration with NVIDIA on GaN-based power conversion systems for AI data centres, centred on a high-voltage intermediate bus converter for 800-VDC architectures. That partnership addresses the engineering of power delivery; the market's current concern is the broader question of how durable and profitable the AI investment cycle will prove. The NVIDIA tie-up does not answer that question on its own.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

A Hardware Anchor for Physical AI

On the startup front, Infineon, NVIDIA, Microsoft and UnternehmerTUM launched the "Physical AI Growth Lab," an equity-free accelerator aimed at young companies working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI. Infineon is contributing power electronics, microcontrollers and sensors — a contribution firmly rooted on the hardware side, which says more about the initiative's substance than a loose association with the AI theme would.

The company's Startup Challenge has also put robotics in the spotlight. On Monday Infineon named the winners of its humanoid robotics competition: AdapTronics took first place ahead of COSMOKE and TECHiFAB. Together the two efforts represent different modes of engaging with young firms — one a contest with prize-winning participants, the other a joint accelerator with industry partners — and both sit in the realm of physical and industrial AI applications.

Supply Security and the 200mm Shift

Further out on the operational side, Infineon and Wolfspeed agreed on 15 October a multi-year supply contract for 200-mm silicon carbide wafers. The deal supports Infineon's move from 150-mm substrates to the larger format. Unlike the startup initiatives, it concerns wafer supply, adding a sourcing agreement to the application-focused activities.

Infineon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What ties these threads together for investors is the gap between market mood and business development. The recent share price losses alone say nothing about the commercial success of the new programmes, and the supply agreement offers no immediate rebuttal to today's market scepticism — nor does the general selling pressure imply any change in how that project is progressing.

The next scheduled catalyst is the release of fourth-quarter 2026 results on 10 November 2026. Until then, sentiment toward the technology sector is likely to dominate the tape, with the announced cooperations and supply arrangements to be judged on their own merits.
