IonQ's Order Book Is Full for 2027 — Now Comes the Hard Part
Published on 11/08/2026 at 07:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deIonQ has spent the past week proving that demand for its quantum systems is not the problem. The company says its Superion-256 capacity is sold out for 2027, with orders for 2028 already being taken. New contracts signed through its IonQ Platform in the third quarter of 2026 totaled roughly $290 million, of which about $180 million was tied specifically to quantum computing.
That backlog is a concrete gauge of appetite stretching beyond the current fiscal year. But a full order book only sets the starting line. What shareholders eventually collect depends on what it costs IonQ to fill those orders — and on that front, the numbers are moving in the wrong direction.
A record top line, a thinner slice of it
Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 hit a record $173.8 million, up 336% from the same period a year earlier. The IonQ Platform accounted for $90.3 million of that, a 127% increase, while SkyWater Foundry Services added $83.5 million.
The catch sits beneath the headline. Gross margin came in at 21.9%, less than half the 46.7% recorded in the year-earlier quarter. Because the SkyWater acquisition reshapes the revenue mix, the platform's own growth deserves to be tracked separately from the earnings power of the group as a whole — but the consolidated margin still tells investors how much of each sales dollar survives direct costs.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IonQ?
Management has lifted its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $505–515 million, up from an earlier range of $450–460 million. Remaining performance obligations have more than doubled to $1.2 billion, according to the company.
The cost of building at speed
Profitability remains distant. Adjusted EBITDA came in at a loss of $133.6 million for the quarter. The $564.0 million net profit attributable to IonQ reflected a non-cash valuation effect on warrants rather than cash generation.
Funding the build-out has a price that goes beyond the income statement. Pro-forma liquidity, including investments, stood at $3.7 billion after an October share issuance — a cushion that gives IonQ room to deliver on its contracts and push toward better returns. Yet the diluted share count climbed 97.1% between the third quarter of 2023 and the third quarter of 2026, making dilution a central factor in how the expansion is valued. Per-share economics improve only if operating performance outpaces the growth in shares.
The Elisity acquisition added another layer. IonQ paid for the zero-trust security firm entirely in stock, issuing common shares worth $1.15 billion at closing, with sellers eligible for up to $150 million more contingent on revenue milestones through January 2028.
Access as a strategy, not just a gesture
Alongside the quarterly figures, IonQ used Wednesday to widen its footprint in public-sector and academic research. The company pledged 300 hours of annual quantum computer access to selected universities in developing Commonwealth countries. The commitment also covers help migrating selected public institutions to quantum-safe systems, plus radar imagery and analyst time.
IonQ at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A separate partnership with QuantumCT will give universities, researchers and businesses in Connecticut access to IonQ machines under a contract covering more than 150 hours of cloud runtime.
Those agreements broaden the funnel of users familiar with IonQ's hardware. Whether they translate into recurring revenue is a question for future quarters. The 23% jump in the share price on Friday, however, was driven by the record sales figure and the raised annual outlook — not by the access announcements.
Three tests that matter more than the backlog
The sold-out 2027 capacity is a promising signal, and the platform contracts anchor demand firmly in quantum computing rather than in acquired foundry work. The more persuasive story for shareholders emerges only when IonQ delivers those orders, lifts gross margin, and puts its capital to work efficiently. Until then, the order book is the easy part.
