IREN's Australian Ambitions Meet Their First Real Test at Wagga Wagga

IREN shares rose 2.9% on sector momentum, but its 900 MW Redbank data centre remains an early-stage proposal outside its 5 GW secured portfolio.

IREN shares climbed 2.9% on Thursday, lifted less by anything the company said than by a filing made elsewhere. According to media reports, Anthropic's stock-exchange application the previous day had brightened the mood across AI and neocloud names, and IREN rode that sector-wide wave rather than any fresh announcement of its own.

The distinction matters, because the company's own news flow has been heavy on plans and light on shovels in the ground. That gap between announcement and execution is where the real investment case now sits.

A 900 MW Proposal Still in First Gear

On 14 October, IREN unveiled plans for a data centre near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, to be called Redbank. The project is in an early evaluation phase — a proposal, not a finished facility. As designed it would carry 900 MW of capacity and could absorb more than AU$10 billion of investment, with grid connection targeted from 2029. Between the announcement and that connection date lie the substantial steps that decide whether any of it happens.

Reports from 15 October added a crucial qualifier: Redbank was not part of IREN's announced portfolio of 5 GW of secured power. The company was working toward a grid connection, and intended to lodge a scoping report for the New South Wales planning process by the end of October. An extra site on the drawing board is not the same as extra secured capacity, and treating the two as interchangeable banks part of the potential success before it has been earned.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Jobs, Rates and a 30-Year Commitment

Saturday's coverage put targets of more than 500 construction jobs and more than 200 permanent positions against the project. Those are concrete arguments for local benefit — and they are targets, not payroll. Investors should neither book them as employment already created nor dismiss them as mere public relations.

Alongside the jobs, media reports point to proposed payments to the local council of more than AU$200 million spread over 30 years, putting a long-term financial contribution on the table next to the employment figures.

A community meeting has since shown that projects of this scale are not a matter between the company and the capital markets alone. Attendance numbers, though, say nothing about how much support or opposition actually exists; neither a local green light nor a blockade can be inferred from them. What counts is whether IREN can turn the promised benefits into a project that holds together on the ground.

Two Campuses, Two Very Different Stages

The contrast with Spain sharpens the point. Roughly a week before the Redbank news, IREN announced a campus of about 300 MW in Badajoz under the banner of IREN Europe. By the company's own account, grid-connected power supply and a civil works permit were secured, with first operations targeted for 2028. That start date remains a goal, but the differing stages of the two projects justify weighting them differently — a more sensible lens than a single headline capacity number.

The European push came with names attached: Roberto Purcaro was appointed managing director for Europe, and Ángel Corcóstegui took the chair of the European supervisory board.

The Next Hard Data Point

IREN has set 5 November 2026 as the date for its first-quarter results for fiscal 2027, a period that closed on 30 September 2026. The company announced the schedule on 22 October. A conference call will follow, starting at 17:00 Eastern Time, giving investors both the numbers and the discussion around them.

That date offers the next scheduled occasion to set actual business performance beside the expansion blueprint. Redbank widens IREN's options; it does not yet widen secured delivery to match. The opportunity is considerable — but concrete progress on power supply, planning and local buy-in would persuade more than another capacity record.
