IREN's Wild Week: A Hedge Fund Meltdown, a $100 Price Target, and a Stock Caught Between Two Identities

IREN shares rebound after hedge fund selloff; Bernstein's $100 target and $4B AI revenue goal fuel optimism despite high volatility.

The whiplash was almost impossible to process. On Wednesday, IREN shares touched a low of $29.31. By Thursday's close, the stock had rocketed 30.5 percent to $38.26. Then came Friday, when Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani slapped a Buy rating and a $100 price target on the name — briefly sending shares up another 7 percent before the rally fizzled. In Frankfurt, the stock told a slightly different story, trading at €31.98 and giving back 3.46 percent on the day.

For a company whose 30-day annualized volatility sits at a staggering 136.75 percent, this kind of turbulence is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

The Collapse That Started It All

The initial sell-off had nothing to do with IREN's fundamentals. It was the fallout from a spectacular hedge fund implosion. Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund — which had ballooned from roughly $225 million to as much as $45 billion in record time — found itself crushed under fourfold gross leverage. When Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Bank of America issued margin calls, the fund was forced to unload its entire public equity portfolio in a block trade to Citadel on Wednesday. That included an IREN position worth $401 million. Other AI names like SanDisk and CoreWeave were caught in the downdraft before staging sharp recoveries alongside IREN the following day.

A $100 Price Target Lands Mid-Recovery

Bernstein's Chhugani chose this volatile moment to reaffirm his conviction. His $100 target implies upside of 161 percent from Thursday's closing price. The thesis rests on a shifting dynamic in the AI infrastructure space: recent direct master lease agreements — AMD with Core Scientific, Nvidia with Hut 8 — signal that semiconductor giants are increasingly contracting directly with infrastructure providers. IREN, in Chhugani's view, is positioning itself as a vertically integrated neocloud player in this environment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The broader analyst community is more measured. The consensus across twelve firms lands at an average price target of $75.18, with eight Buy ratings, three Holds, and one Sell.

The Numbers Behind the Hype

The optimism isn't entirely speculative. Management has raised its annualized AI cloud revenue target to more than $4 billion, up from $3.7 billion, with 85 percent of that already locked in by contract. The customer roster reads like a who's who of the AI boom: Microsoft, Nvidia, Perplexity, Figure AI, Together AI, Fluidstack, Fireworks AI, Fal AI, and Hume AI. Recent multi-year cloud contracts total $2.8 billion, carry an average term of four years, and include prepayments of 45 percent.

Still, the gap between ambition and delivery remains wide. Last quarter's AI cloud revenue came in at $33.6 million — an annualized run rate of $134.4 million against a net loss of $247.8 million. The company holds roughly $7.6 billion in cash, and Co-CEO Daniel Roberts insists demand outstrips available capacity. The buildout plan calls for 480 megawatts of data center capacity by 2026 and 1.2 gigawatts by 2027.

One overhang persists: Meta's Compute project, launched in early July, is viewed as a formidable competitor in the neocloud space. It's a well-known headwind that failed to dampen Friday's rally.

A Stock Torn Between Two Stories

IREN's identity crisis is the real story here. Once a Bitcoin miner, the company now wants to be seen as an AI cloud provider — and the market can't quite decide which narrative to price. The stock has more than doubled over twelve months, up 134.83 percent, yet sits just 1.92 percent below its level at the start of the year. Those two numbers capture the chaos in between.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The gap to the November record high of €68.61 stands at 51.73 percent, while the stock trades 148.87 percent above its August low. Both the 50-day moving average of €42.92 and the 200-day average of €42.18 remain overhead resistance. With a market capitalization of €10.52 billion, IREN is no longer a niche crypto-mining play — but it still carries the volatility DNA of one.

The pattern is now familiar: a contract announcement, a raised target, and the stock lurches violently in whichever direction the wind blows. Whether this week's rebound marks a genuine repricing or just another violent swing depends on a simple question — can announced contracts become reliable cash flows? The next earnings report in September will provide the first real answer.
