For years, Lenovo carried the label of a cyclical PC manufacturer — a company whose fortunes rose and fell with consumer spending and whose margins rarely inspired much excitement. That characterization no longer fits. What has unfolded over recent months amounts to a fundamental operational pivot toward data-center infrastructure built for artificial intelligence, and the question investors now face is no longer how many laptops the company moves, but whether this transformation can sustainably reshape its earnings profile.

The Numbers Behind the Turnaround

The hard data makes the case. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026/27, group revenue jumped 43% year over year to a record $26.9 billion, while adjusted net profit climbed 176% to $1.1 billion. Data-center technology drove the bulk of that momentum.

Within the Infrastructure Solutions Group, revenue nearly doubled — up 98% to $8.5 billion — and the segment posted a record operating profit of $777 million. Perhaps most striking was the operating margin, which expanded to 9.1%. That figure demonstrates convincingly that the AI boom is delivering not just top-line growth for Lenovo but genuine profitability. AI-related revenue reached $9.3 billion in the quarter, accounting for roughly 35% of total sales.

First Place in the Global Server Market

Industry data released Monday, September 14, by IDC for the second quarter of 2026 confirms that this push is landing with customers. Lenovo claimed the top spot worldwide in x86 server shipments for the first time, with deliveries up 45.6% year over year — far outpacing overall market growth of just 8.9% during the same period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lenovo?

A global market share of 7.4% lifted the company two places in the rankings. Those share gains show that demand for AI servers is benefiting Lenovo disproportionately. At the same time, an AI server pipeline valued at $54 billion — up 157% quarter over quarter — signals a substantial backlog still waiting to be worked through.

Analyst Upgrades and Cloud Momentum

The shift has not gone unnoticed on the analyst side. Roughly two weeks ago, JPMorgan upgraded the stock to "Overweight" and raised its price target to HK$30, citing improved server profitability and solid demand in the devices business. Morgan Stanley's experts likewise pointed to persistently strong demand for both general-purpose servers and specialized AI systems. Cloud customers account for approximately 70% of the company's server revenue, the investment bank noted, which is why it expects further acceleration in the Infrastructure Solutions division.

Additional confidence came from CFO Zheng Xiaoming, who said Lenovo is targeting a net profit margin of 5% to 8% over the long term and considers itself noticeably undervalued relative to rival Dell Technologies.

A Valuation That Demands Flawless Execution

The market has responded with an unprecedented re-rating. The stock closed at EUR 4.19 on Friday, a gain of 307% since the start of the year, leaving it just 0.6% below its 52-week high of EUR 4.21 reached on September 18. Friday's session alone brought a 9.3% advance as the server milestone fueled visible euphoria.

From a medium-term perspective, the opportunities still outweigh the risks — but the valuation level warrants caution. Anyone staying invested or entering at this price is betting that margin expansion in the infrastructure segment will endure. The market is now pricing in a near-perfect scenario for AI orders.

Whether the company can maintain this pace will become clearer when the next quarterly report is released on October 29, 2026. Until then, one thing is certain: Lenovo has completed the operational leap from pure hardware manufacturer to global AI heavyweight.
