The UK's workplace safety regulator has a new board member. Louise Hosking has been confirmed as a non-executive director of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a role that will see her help shape the organisation's strategic direction from the top.
The appointment, confirmed by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on August 11, 2026, fills the vacancy left by Professor Gina Radford, who is due to step down in September. Hosking joins at a time when the HSE continues to oversee workplace safety standards across British businesses, from construction sites to office environments.
New Leadership for the Safety Regulator
Hosking's arrival was welcomed by Sarah Newton, chair of the HSE, who leads the board's oversight of the regulator's executive team. Non-executive directors provide independent scrutiny and strategic guidance, ensuring the HSE's leadership is held to account while helping set the long-term direction for workplace safety enforcement.
The HSE is the national regulator for workplace health and safety in Great Britain. Its board combines executive and non-executive members, with the latter drawn from outside the organisation to bring fresh perspective and challenge to decision-making.
A Day of Regulatory Appointments
August 11, 2026 also saw leadership changes across other regulatory and industry bodies internationally.
In India, Dr. Shaleen, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was appointed as a director in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) in New Delhi. The Haryana government placed his services at the disposal of the central government to take up the role. Dr. Shaleen previously served as managing director of the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation.
Meanwhile, in Germany, Reinhard Quast was re-elected as president of the Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB) at its general assembly. Quast, who has led the association since 2018, secured the position with a significant majority. He will continue alongside vice presidents Uwe Nostitz, Rüdiger Otto, and Wolfgang Schubert-Raab, with Oliver Heib and Jürgen Kullmann newly elected to the board.
Board Changes in the Private Sector
The corporate sector also saw notable boardroom shifts on the same day. At Ugar Sugar Works, independent director Hari Athawale concluded his tenure following the expiration of his term, while non-executive director Prafulla Shirgaokar resigned from his position. Shirgaokar is designated to become Chairman Emeritus from August 12, 2026, prompting a reconstitution of the company's board committees.
Elsewhere, CapitaLand Investment (CLI) announced that Hsieh Fu Hua, former CEO of the Singapore Exchange, will take on the role of deputy chairman of its board from August 12, 2026. His appointment brings the CLI board to 12 members, including nine independent directors.
