McDonald's Ties Its Turnaround Hopes to a Cheaper Menu — and a Familiar Toy

McDonald's leans on discounts and promotions as US growth softens, while lifting its quarterly dividend 4% to $1.93 for a 50th straight year.

McDonald's is leaning on price cuts and limited-time promotions to pull budget-conscious diners back through its doors, a push that comes as the burger giant's US business posts its softest growth in over a year.

The company and its franchisees have settled on a longer-term pricing framework aimed at luring value-seeking customers back into restaurants, according to a Bloomberg report published Thursday. The strategy carries a built-in tension: discounts tend to squeeze the operating margins of franchise operators, leaving management to balance market-share gains against the profitability of its store network.

Promotions Take Center Stage

Beyond the pricing overhaul, McDonald's is rolling out a series of attention-grabbing stunts. On Tuesday it launched a limited-run Happy Meal toy tie-in at US locations built around the SpongeBob and One Piece brands.

Overseas, the chain is betting on international menu items to generate buzz. Starting September 22, outlets in the UK and Ireland will host "World Menu Heist 2.0," a campaign that temporarily adds products from Germany, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, India, China and Australia to local menus.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying McDonald's?

A Dividend Milestone

Shareholders, meanwhile, continue to collect. The board on Thursday approved a 4% increase in the quarterly dividend to $1.93 per share — the 50th consecutive year McDonald's has raised its payout, a streak that keeps the company in rareified dividend-aristocrat territory.

The capital-return news lands alongside a mixed reception on Wall Street. BTIG Research reaffirmed its Buy rating and a $350 price target on Wednesday. That same day, Eric Gonzalez of Seaport Research Partners initiated coverage with a Neutral stance. Citigroup moved in the opposite direction on Thursday, trimming its price target to $310 from $345 while keeping its Buy rating intact.

Much of the caution among industry watchers stems from uncertainty over how consumers will behave in the months ahead. The market rewards McDonald's dependable dividend policy, yet anxiety over a drawn-out price war is weighing on sentiment, and several research houses have trimmed their multi-year forecasts as a precaution.

Earnings Offered a Split Verdict

The most recent quarterly results, released roughly two weeks ago, cut both ways. McDonald's reported adjusted earnings of $3.38 per share for the second quarter of 2026, but revenue of $7.10 billion fell short of consensus estimates at the time.

The takeaway is that even a fast-food heavyweight is feeling customer reticence. Cheaper menus may steady foot traffic, though they are unlikely to deliver a sharp jump in earnings volume in the near term.

Shares Hug the Bottom of the Range

In German trading, the stock closed Friday at EUR 216.20, leaving it just 0.6% above its 52-week low of EUR 215.00. Year to date, the shares are down 18%.

Whether the recalibrated offer, worked out in tandem with franchisees, can meaningfully revive US demand is a question the coming months will have to answer.
